PAUL EDWARD (ARKIE) CLARDY Paul Edward (Arkie) Clardy, 70, Holden, passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2000, at Warrensburg Manor Care Center in Warrensburg, Missouri. He had been a resident of the Holden area since 1988. He was born on Tuesday, September 9, 1930 in Kansas City, Missouri the second son of Luther F. Clardy, Sr. and Eva Marie Byrd Clardy. He is survived by his son, Paul E. Clardy, Clinton, IA; three daughters, Vickey J. Clardy-Chadd, Raytown, Linda S. Medeiros, Kansas City, MO, and Patricia A. Clardy, Kansas City, MO; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and his first wife, Delores Clardy. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; and his son, William P. Clardy. Paul was a veteran of the Korean War, serving from November 3, 1950 to November 2, 1953. He achieved the rank of Corporal on March 20, 1953. He received several medals for honorably serving his country. He retired from General Motors of Kansas City and was a member of the Auto Workers Union for more than 30 years. A memorial service will be held in Kansas City for family and friends at a later date. RICHARD LAWRENCE BROWN Richard Lawrence Brown, 78, Warsaw, Missouri, (formerly of Kingsville and Liberty), died Saturday, June 16, 2001 at St. Lukes Hospital in Kansas City. Mr. Brown was born Saturday, December 30, 1922 in Odessa, the son of Oscar H. Brown and Dorothy I. Simmermon. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific Theatre, January 21, 1943 to December 23, 1945, and attaining the rank of Technician Fifth Grade. Mr. Brown was a heavy machine operator, both self employed and had worked for Shamrock Construction Co., Dodge City, KS. He was a member of Local 101, Operating Engineers, Kansas City; life member of the Holden VFW Post 5844, member of Holden Masonic Lodge No. 262 and Poplar Baptist Church, Warsaw. On October 30, 1942 he married Billie L. Morris in Pittsville. She survives of the home. Also surviving are two daughters, Sybil I. Cornwell, Holden, and Stephanie L. McConville, Kingsville; four sons, Larry D. Brown, Altoona, Iowa, Jarry E. Brown, Azusa, CA, Tarry R. Brown, Warsaw, Clifford H. Brown, Kingsville; 20 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; four sisters, Peggy Haymart, Las Vegas, NV, Liz Cox, Denver, CO, Nancy Chanz, Fort Worth, TX, Joyce Crowe, Salina, KS; one brother, Donald Brown, Raytown, MO. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Chapel, Holden. Rev. Don Liebel officiated. Julie Stout, organist, accompanied Vicky Stout, vocalist. Pallbearers were Richard Cornwell, Dale McConville, Justin Cornwell, Jason Brown, Chris Cornwell, and Brook Brown. Interment and graveside services were held at Duncan Cemetery, south of Kingsville, under the direction of Williams Funeral Chapel. Masonic services were provided by Dale Williams 32° Mason and members of Holden Lodge 262; military graveside honors were provided by Holden VFW #5844 and Munday-Hancock Post #90 of American Legion, Holden. Memorial contributions were suggested to Duncan Cemetery Association. ROWLAND L. WEST Rowland L. West, 78, Warrensburg, MO (formerly of Holden and Clinton, MO) passed away Saturday, June 16, 2001 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City. Mr. West was born Monday, September 4, 1922 north of Kingsville, the son of Jesse Basil West and Ethel L. Brown West. Mr. West had been a banker working for the Bank of Holden, The Citizens Bank in Warrensburg, and had been president of Union State Bank in Clinton and president of UMB in Warrensburg. He had also been a real estate agent for DeLozier Realty Co. in Warrensburg. He was a 1940 Holden High School graduate; an Army Veteran of World War II he served in the South Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Elks Lodge, Rotary Club, Mule & Jennies Booster at CMSU, Ambassador with the Chamber of Commerce, former president of the Johnson County Historical Society, Veterans of Safety, First United Methodist Church, all of Warrensburg; and served on the Community Council at Whiteman Air Force Base. On April 21, 1946 he married Ima Mae Skinner in Kansas City and she survives of the home. Also surviving are three daughters, Ginger Lee Reader, Warrensburg, Lois Mae Merle and Jetuan Swift, both of Lee's Summit; three sons, Charles Rowland West, Seattle, WA, Robert West, Andover, KS, Jesse West, Lee's Summit; 10 grandchildren; and one great grandson; three sisters, Nancy Marguerite Rowe, Warrensburg, Maxine Hughes, Raytown, and Jean Wharton, Holden; two brothers, Hubert West, Grand Rapids, MI and Lloyd West, Kansas City. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lois Corkran and Ozelle Niewald; and four brothers, Clifton Dale West, Arthur West, Raymond West and Lawrence West. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Warrensburg, under the direction of Williams Funeral Chapel, Warrensburg. Officiants will be Rev. Scott Moon and Rev. Joe Alexander. Pallbearers are Paul Rowland, Gary Waisner, Jim Hudson, George Sample, Neal Holmes, and Jewell Province. Honorary pallbearers are Aldersgate Class of First United Methodist Church. Interment was at Holden Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to First United Methodist Church Building Fund. LEROY ATKINSON Leroy Atkinson, 86, Chilhowee, Missouri, passed away Sunday, June 17, 2001 at his son's home in Chilhowee. Mr. Atkinson was born Sunday, September 6, 1914 in Blairstown, the son of William Thomas Atkinson and Lena Belle Akers Atkinson. He had lived in Chilhowee since 1973. Mr. Atkinson was a farmer and a member of the South Fork Baptist Church, Freeman, MO. On February 11, 1936 in Clinton, Missouri, he married Lora Flossie Barnard. She preceded him in death on May 29, 1993. Survivors include three daughters, Opal Casteel, Clinton, Charlotte Murphy, Steel, MO, and Mary Ann Rector, Oak Grove; five sons, Robert L. Atkinson, Chilhowee, Harold E. Atkinson, Holden, Tommy A. Atkinson, Chilhowee, Benjamin F. Atkinson, Independence, Tony L. Atkinson, Kansas City, MO; two sisters, Lucille Barnard and Millie Hadley, both of Holden; two brothers, Paul and Robert L., both of Clinton; 28 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lora Irene Rainey; three sons, Joe E. Atkinson, Art Atkinson and Earl Atkinson; three sisters, Chessie, Florence and Frances; five brothers, Oliver, Edgar, John Clyde, Roy and Louis.
