JOSEPH H. GANN Joseph H. Gann, 78, Warrensburg, died Friday, June 22, 2001 at St. Lukes Hospital in Kansas City. He was born Thursday, August 3, 1922 in St. Joseph, Missouri the son of Luther Gann, Sr. and Beulah Mae Koch Gann. He had lived most of his life in Johnson County. A veteran of World War II he served in the Army in the European Theatre. He was a former member of the Holden Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post No. 5844. Mr. Gann was a member of Medford Methodist Church. He worked for Lawler Service Station in Holden from 1946-1968. On September 25, 1943 he married Ethel Ann Jarman in Holden. She survives of the home. Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Ron (JoAnn) Ferguson, Laurie, MO, Mrs. Larry (Janet) Holmes, Miami, FL, Mrs. Patrick (Pam) Zander, Atlanta, GA; a son, Don Gann and wife Mary, Lee's Summit; ten grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Martha Clinger, Holden, and Mary Lou Bryant, Clinton; three brothers, George Gann, Pinckneyville, IL, Luther Gann, Jr., Holden, and James Eddie Gann, Sparta, IL. Mr. Gann was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jerry Gann, June 18, 1991 and a brother, Kenneth Gann, April 15, 1998. Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at Williams Funeral Chapel, Holden. Brian Gann officiated. Organist Susan Brockhaus accompanied vocalist Mike Daldrup. Songs included "Good Night, Good Morning" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Pallbearers were Tony Gann, Steve Holmes, Chris Ferguson, Andy Stangel, Mike Schofield, and Brian Gann. Interment was held at Pittsville Cemetery with Military Honors provided by Holden VFW Post 5844 and Munday-Hancock Post 90 of the American Legion, Holden. HENRY DUNCAN "HANK" GOWER Henry Duncan "Hank" Gower, died on Saturday, June 23, 2001 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg, MO. He was 84 years old at the time of his death. Hank Gower was born in Logan County, KY to Henry Wilson Gower and Dora Elizabeth (Arnold) Gower. On January 6, 1945 he married Alice Marie Beck of Windsor, MO. She survives of the home. He is also survived by Kolyn Nancy Cochran of Harrisonville, his daughter; and two sons, Henry D. Gower, Jr., Warrensburg, and Phillip Beck Gower, Columbus; six grandchildren, Christopher Aaron Gower, Clifton John Gower, Simon Gower, Zain Gower, Cara Busenhart and Diane Richter; and two great grandchildren, Chloe Noelle Gower and Meagan Richter. A decorated veteran of WWII, Hank Gower retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1964 after 22 years of active service which included the South Pacific Theater of Operations during WWII, occupied West Germany after the war, and several stateside bases. Among his many decorations were the Silver Star, the Soldier's Medal, several Bronze Stars, and the Purple Heart. He retired as a Commissioned Chief Warrant Officer. Hank was proud of having received his advanced Masonic degrees in the lodges of Scotland. He was a member of the Blue Lodge of Windsor; the Scottish Rites; and Ararat Shrine in K.C. Hank Gower was a member of Matthews-Crawford Post 131 of the American Legion in Warrensburg. Moving from Pleasant Hill, over thirty years ago, Mr. Gower made his residence Warrensburg. While living in Pleasant Hill, he was a Charter member of the Pleasant Hill Lions Club, a Board Member of the Pleasant Hill Fall Festival, a member of the Cass County Disaster Relief Committee, and the Kuntry Kuzzins Square Dance Club. During the 1950s and 60s, Hank was very active as an adult leader of the KC area Council of the Boy Scouts of America and served as a District Commissioner for several years. A member of the Tribe of Mic-o-say, he was known within the Tribe as Warrior Flying Birchbark. After retirement from the US Air Force, Mr. Gower was employed by First National Bank of KC as an agricultural trust officer, later owning and operating independent insurance agencies in Warrensburg, Lee's Summit, and Clinton. He was an avid gardner. A Deacon ordained in the the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Hank Gower's memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Warrensburg, under the direction of Williams Funeral Chapel, Warrensburg, on Thursday, June 28, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. The family will receive visitors from 6:00-7:00 p.m. prior to the service, in the church parlor. Ministers Alex Wales and Erica Harley will officiate during the service. Organist Marilyn Homan will accompany vocalist Ed Quistorff. Music will include "In the Garden," "Amazing Grace," "Blessed Assurance," and "Oh Jerusalem." Memorial contributions are suggested to the Warrensburg Community Rose Garden. FLOYD SILVERTHORN Floyd Silverthorn, 92, Holden, Missouri, passed away Monday, June 25, 2001 at Holden Manor Care Center. He was born March 12, 1909 in Brown City, Michigan the son of H. Lee and Rosena (Hollenbeck) Silverthorn. On June 12, 1935 he married Beulah Irene Barr in Melvin, Michigan. In April 1951 he moved to Holden where he was a farmer and dairyman. Mr. Silverthorn served twelve years as a director for Pure Milk Association. He was a member and elder of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Holden. He leaves his wife, Beulah Silverthorn, of the home; two sons, Ronald F. Silverthorn, Highlandville, MO, and John Silverthorn, Holden; one daughter, Elaine Stowell, Holden; two sisters, Helen Weaver, Dearborn, MI, and Gladys Keesler, Brown City, MI; four grandchildren, Marie Manson, Brattleboro, VT, Sharon Briscoe, Joseph Stowell, and Anita Anderson, all of Holden; and seven great grandchildren, Nathan and Seth Briscoe, Holden, Kari and Kori Manson, Brattleboro, VT, Tyler Stowell, and Ryan and Taylor Anderson, all of Holden. A grandson, Lee Michael Silverthorn, preceded him in death on March 17, 1979. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 28, 2001 at the Community of Christ Church, Holden. Elders Robert Stewart and Warren Stowell will officiate. Pallbearers will be Adrian Phelps, Gordon Kendrick, Floyd Kendrick, Herbert Fender, Arnold Bray, and Fred Christenson. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Holden, under the direction of Ben Cast & Son-Wood Funeral Home. Friends may call from 9:30-10:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. DAVID M. COOPER David M. Cooper, 56, Lone Jack, Missouri, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001 at his home. Mr. Cooper was born Friday, January 26, 1945 in Linn County, Missouri, the son of Marvin Cooper and Pearl Norvell Cooper. He was a 1963 Meadville High School graduate. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he served from 1963-1967. Mr. Cooper had attended Northeast Missouri State University and Central Missouri State University where he received his B.S. in Safety Education in 1971, M.S. in Education in 1975 and Specialist in Education in 1988. He started his teaching career in Belle, MO, schools in 1971. He was in Leeton from 1973-1976; principal at St. Elizabeth, MO; assistant principal and director of athletics at Knob Noster, MO 1976-1977; teacher at Bowling Green, MO, from 1982-1985; principal at Concordia, 1985-1991; Superintendent at Lone Jack from 1991-1998; and since 1999 he was Executive Director of Missouri Association of Rural Education (M.A.R.E.) overseeing 250 school districts. Most recently he had been Superintendent at Carrizozo, New Mexico school district. Mr. Cooper was a member of the Missouri State Teachers Association, Missouri Association of School Administrators, Missouri Association of Rural Education (Executive Board), West Central Administrators Association, Cooperating School Districts of the Suburban Kansas City area, Lone Jack Civic Club and University of Missouri Extension Council Board, Jackson, Co. and Hope United Methodist Church in Lone Jack. On July 3, 1969, in Independence, MO, he married Cheryl Butterfield. She survives of the home. Also surviving are a daughter, Kristen Webster, Harrisonville, MO; a son, David Brent Cooper and wife, Kathy, Sedalia; two grandchildren, Cailey and Cameron Cooper, Sedalia; his mother, Pearl Cooper, Meadville, MO; a sister, Linda Burtch, Chula, MO; two brothers, George Cooper, Lone Jack and Richard Cooper, Meadville, MO. Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 22, 2001 at Grace United Methodist Church, Lee's Summit, MO. Rev. James Stanfield-Meyers officiated. Kelly Collings, organist, accompanied Dana Loudermilk, the vocalist. Burial was in the Meadville Cemetery, Meadville, MO. Pallbearers were Dale Pollard, Ron Clawson, Bob Houk, Arnall Early, Jim Born, Jim Finley. Memorial contributions were suggested to the American Cancer Society. JEANNE MARIE SHULER Jeanne Marie Shuler, 48, Holden, died Thursday, June 21, 2001 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, KS. She was born Thursday, November 13, 1952 in Lexington Park, Maryland, the daughter of Gene Lundy and Iris Dalaba Lundy. She had lived north of Holden since 1986. Mrs. Shuler was a 1971 Ruskin High School graduate. She was a homemaker and a member of Enon Baptist Church at Pittsville. On April 30, 1979 in Miami, Oklahoma, she married Danny Shuler. He survives of the home. Also surviving are two daughters, Jessica Kahrs and husband Ken, Whiteman Air Force Base, MO, and DeAnne Shuler, of the home; three grandchildren, Jeannelle, ShaiLeigh and Kendall; her parents, Gene and Iris Lundy, Kansas City, MO; sister, Lea Smith and husband Rick, Indianapolis, IN; two brothers, Bob Lundy and wife Jolene, Peculiar; Michael Lundy and wife Heather, Alba, MO. She was preceded in death by a sister, Kelly Lundy. Services were Sunday, June 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Chapel in Holden The Reverend Dwight Decker officiated. Judy Yancey accompanied Lindsay Pulliam in "Count Your Blessings," "Amazing Grace," "Because You Love Me," and "Close to You." Pallbearers were Mike Lundy, Bob Lundy, Jamie Lundy, Ken Kahrs, Rick Smith and Scott Shuler. Honorary Pallbearers were Steve Ewing and John Brockhaus. Interment was in the Rock Springs Cemetery, north of Holden. The family suggests contributions to the Leukemia Foundation.
