    Married date and place unknown. Before 1870 census, Obion Co., TN.
    Served 4th Regiment US Colored Artillery. Note: "The attached document indicates AWOL 1864. Later documents indicate Cobb missed a roll call due to illness and it took a few months for the record to catch up." Per Charles Brown, March,2005.
  • Arminta Bransford, b. Mar 1852 Virginia, d. 18 Jul 1914 Springfield, Greene Co., Mo.; buried 21 Jul 1914 Hazelwood Cemetery, Springfield. Daughter of Louisa, former slave of Bransford family. The record of slave births in the Bransford Bible ends in 1851, when the Bransford family granted indentured servant status to their slaves. Arminta, conceived in slavery, was born in freedom March 1852 so is not listed in the slave birth record with her brothers and sisters.

  • 1. Lot 1, block 9 Pierce City Cemetery. No date of purchase in record at cemetery. Purchased by, Jas. Cobb, and may have been either James Sr. prior to his death in 1898 or by James Jr. at the time of his father's death. Old cloth bound ledger at the cemetery shows Cobb name on Lot 1 Block 9.
  • 2. Notice of death published 1 Dec 1898 in Pierce City Empire, page 4: "Jas. Cobb, colored, died at his residence last night of dropsy. He will be buried tomorrow from the A. M. E. church. He was a well-known colored man of this city, honest and upright."

  • 1. Death certificate lists mother as Louisa Bransford. Information from Arminta's son, Earnest Cobb, DDS.

Interviewed in Springfield, Missouri as a refugee from Pierce City, Missouri by Robertus Love, reporter from St. Louis, following the lynching of Will Godley, the burning of five black residences, the murder of French Godley and Peter Hampton and the expulsion of all persons of color from Pierce City by a mob.

[Note: the document is headed "Sheriff's Deed under Trust Deed Sale." L. L. Allen had been appointed trustee on the original instrument but refused to execute foreclosure. Faris then went to Sheriff John Manlove, who executed the sale and deed.]
