THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Closing Exercises Attended
With Pleasure

Teachers Chosen for Next Year

..The closing exercises of the Pierce City Public Schools, yesterday, were attended with pleasure as well as regrets--pleasure of reviewing the advancement ment[sic] made within the past year, and regrets for the parting of teachers and pupils who may never again meet in the school room.
..Parents and friends of the schools present were interested in the excercises, and were unsparing in their praise of the succes of the excellent corps of teachers.
..At one o'clock, Prof. D. E. Cloyd, principal, D. T. Wainright and J. A. Legrand, members of the school board, took a carriage and were driven to the ward schools, and being joined later by the editor, he is the better enabled to speak of the pleasurable visits.
..Room No. 9, conducted by Miss Elvira Young, is the colored school. Here the pupils sang "America" with an organ accompaniment, which with other exercises gave a lively air of enthusiasm, as well as evidence of advancement. Twenty visitors were present.
..No. 8, Miss Ida Patterson, teacher. The room was handsomely decorated with flowers and mottos. The school sang "Welcome Friends," after which seventeen little girls rendered the May Queen, song and drill, to the delight of all present.
..Rooms six and seven, Misses McClintock and Bessis Constable, teachers, had assembled together. Decorations were elaborate, and tastefully arranged. Twenty-five visitors present. Twelve boys joined in a commendable presentation of "Over in the Meadow."
..Room 5, with Miss Addie Linn, teacher, was next visited, where a recitation was heard by fifteen visitors. Decorations here were attractive.
..No. 4, conducted by Mrs. Dosia Crebs, was beautifully decorated with flowers, evergreens, flags, picture of Washington, &c. A very pleasant presentation of a ghost story was here witnessed. Number of visitors fifteen.
..A dozen visitors were met in No. 3, conducted by Miss Malda Charles. The exercises were about closing; the many bright and cheerful countenances told plainly that vacation was welcome. Flags and floral decorations were in keeping with the season and the occasion.
..More than a dozen visitors were present in room No. 2, conducted by Miss Elizabeth Park. Here two maidens sang "No One Like Mother to Me," very sweetly, and in perfect unison.

..It seemed the best had been reserved for the last in No. 1, conducted by Miss Bertha Barber. There must have been nearly forty visitors. A very amusing dialogue, was rendered by Joe Manlove, Rosa Bell, Percy Barber, Lida King, and other assistance, in which Joe and his would-be better-halves had stormy meetings. The exercises closed with a very appropriate farewell song.
..Prof. D. E. Cloyd made a very feeling and appropriate parting address. Having determined to enter the real estate business with a brother at Duluth, Minnesota, he felt that this was his farewell to school room labors, a place which had received his best energies and undivided attention in years past. To the able assistance of the energetic and competent ladies in charge of the various departments he was willing to concede a very large measure of the success attained during the past year. Steady progress has been made from year to year until a system of grading adopted in the best schools in the state had been reached, and promotions regularly and systematically made. He surrendered his charge in full confidence that his successor would find little in the way to a satisfactory beginning of the next term. The address was appreciated by the pupils as well as patrons, and the hand-shaking and many hearty wishes for his future prosperity were geniune expressions of the high esteem with which he had endeared himself to all. They regretted that he would not consent to remain another year. It would require much room to speak individually of the merit of the [illegible]. That all who desire should have been re-elected to another term by the board of education last evening is sufficient recommendation.
..Miss Patterson and Miss Park departed last evening, the former going to her home at Marionville, and the latter to Springfield. Miss Bessie Constable will depart in a few days for St. Louis, and will thence go to make her future home in New York. Two of these ladies, it may be said, will depart at an early day armed with cupid's darts, on a honeymoon voyage. They have the best wishes of the Empire.
..The Board of Education met last night and made the following selections:
T. L. Ruby, Lebanon, Mo., Principal.
1. Bertha Barber.
2. Maggie O'Brien.
3. Malda Charles.
4. Dosia Crebs.
