He was handling a breech loading shot gun and by some means it was discharged and the contents entered the side of his head, making a frightful wound.

PROHIBITION CONVENTION
..Members of the Prohibition party to the number of eighteen, met at the court house last Thursday to nominate a ticket. Seven of the number opposed putting a ticket in the field on the thory [sic] that they could make themselves felt to better advantage by remaining in a position to vote directly against objectionable candidates put forth by the old parties. The majority prevailed, however, and the following ticket was nominated:
..Representative, Rev. Jonathan Williams of Aurora.
..Sheriff, C. C. Porter, Aurora
..Collector, S. T. Dickens, Aurora
..Prosecuting Attorney,
..Assessor, J. H. Connett, Aurora
..Treasurer, J. H. Kirby, Mt. Vernon
..Coroner, Dr. J. H. Smith, Mt. Vernon
..Recorder, F. M. Rogers, Marionville
..Circuit Clerk,
..County Clerk, D. W. Almond, Aurora
..Probate Judge, W. M. Watterson, Turnback Township
..Presiding Judge, W. H. Stair, Aurora
..Judge Eastern District, W. P. L. Kirby, Turnback Township

THE REPUBLICAN COUNTY CONVENTION
The Ticket
Representative - Frank Tartar
Presiding Judge - G. B. Moore
Judge W.D. - Henry Keonaman
Judge E.D. - John W. Underwood
Probate Judge - John D. Jones
Circuit Clerk - C. E. Silverwood
Recorder - B. W. Dillard
County Clerk - Oscar P. Moody
Prosecuting Atty - Jos. N. Davies
Sheriff - John Manlove
Collector - J. M. Hunt
Assessor - Henry Shoemaker
Treasurer - W. S. Kendall
..The convention was called to order at 10 o'clock a.m. and C. H. Barnard elected temporary chairman, and F. E. Shriver temporary secretary. After the appointment of committees, the convention adjourned until 1 p.m.
..At the afternoon session the comittee on order of business recommended that the temporary officers be made permanent and that the ticket should be nominated in order as above named. The report was adopted. The order in which the ticket should be nominated had been a big bone of contention. Every candidate wanted it arranged in a different way and the committee delayed the convention an hour in wrangling over the matter. It is safe to say that if the order had been reversed the ticket nominated would have been ditto.
Representative
..H. L. Davis of Lincoln and Frank Tartar of Vineyard named. Tartar nominated by a vote of 67 to 38.
Presiding Judge
..The first ballot resulted as follows for the following candidates: G. B. Moore of North Mt. Vernon, 22; Geo. Wilson of South Mt. Vernon, 33; A. Arnold of Vineyard, 23; W. C. Whinery of Ozark, 27. Moore was nominated on the 8th ballot receiving 53 1/2 to 5 for Wilson; 37 1/2 for Arnold and 9 for Whinery. Necessary for a choice 53. This contest was tedious and long drawn out, all the townships delegations having candidates, playing for advantage, without caring particularly who was nominated. The result was surprise No. 1. Everyone thought Judge Whinery would win hands down and in a rush, but his own delegation threw a damper over his chances at the start by forcing the chairman to call their township a number of times before he was placed before the convention.

[Republican Convention, cont.]
Judge West District
..Henry Koenamen, of Freistatt, who was nominated as a man who was "religiously and politically a Republican" and Martin Van Buren Welsh, of Vineyard were placed before the convention. Koenaman won with 31 1/2 to his opponents 9 1/2.
Judge East District
..John W. Underwood of Aurora and G. C. Sullivan of Turnback were the candidates. Underwood nominated by a vote of 45 1/2 to 18 1/2.

Wright withdrew after the 4th ballot and Silverwood was nominated on the 5th by 55 1/2 to 49 1/2. Marionville and Aurora did it. The first named gave 7 out of 9 for Silverwood and the latter 18 out of 27. The other deligates except Mt. Vernon and Peirce City divided about equal. If there was a "combination" it began to look as if the leaven was working.
Recorder
..These names were presented and received votes on the first ballot as follows: B. W. Dillard, Aurora, 35 1/2; George M. Carey, South Mt. Vernon, 6 1/2; Jo K. Mathews, North Mt. County Clerk
..The first ballot: John A. McCullah, of Buck Prairie, 29; Oscar P. Moody, Mt. Pleasant, 31; J. L. McFall, Ozark, 24; L. B. Reed of Spring River, 21. McFall withdrew after the 3d and Moody nominated on the 4th, receiving 58 to 40 for McCullah and 7 for Reed. Mt. Vernon "saw" Marionville on the vote for circuit clerk by giving 18 solid for Moody.
Prosecuting Attorney
..Jos. M. McPherson, of Mt. Vernon and Jos. N. Davies, of Peirce city named. Davis nominated by 60 1/2 to 44 1/2. Marionville in a fierce manner returned her compliments to Mt. Vernon by giving 9 solid votes for Davies.

Vernon, 24; C. D. Hicks, West Green, 14. McCanse withdrew after the 2d ballot and Manlove nominated on the 3d receiving 54 to 41 for Berry, 3 for Potter and 5 for Hicks.
Collector
..Porter Allen, Friestatt, J. M. Hunt, East Greene, and Henry Wilks, of Spring River, candidates. Hunt nominated on the second ballot by this vote: Hunt 53, Wilks, 47, Allen 5.
Assessor
..This was a battle royal. Payment of debts of all kinds were indulged in. W. W. Overlin, of Aurora, J. A. Crow, of East Greene, and H. C. Shoemaker of Peirce were the candidates. On the first ballot the vote was fairly delivered but after the 7th Crow was withdrawn and Shoemaker nominated on the 8th by a vote of 55 1/2 to 49 1/2. And in the reckoning Peirce carried away the third gem from the collection.
