Fergus Butler's Paternal Line to Henry BUTLER b. 1822 SC
Following are several outlines and explanations pertaining to Henry Butler, b.
1822 <Newberry>, SC, our oldest known paternal link. Please use this
document in its entirety, as it uses both yDNA and other records to refute
common misconceptions about Newberry Co., SC BUTLERs. Women are included to
allay further confusion with so many men having the same given names, plus many
of them are of BUTLER ancestry as well.

Henry BUTLER b. 1822 married into the GOGGANS family which came from
Culpeper and Lunenberg Counties of Virginia. The GOGGANS, who intermarried
with BUTLERs while in Culpeper, moved to the Sandy Run area of Newberry
County, SC in 1766. Of the four brothers and their families who traveled to
Newberry, two of the GOGGANS brothers were married to BUTLER sisters.

Although this is not the paternal line for my son, Jasper, I suspect these
BUTLERs are the correct line overall, as the GOGGANS did not travel alone. I
suspect that a BUTLER brother or cousin came as well.
The M-0167 yDNA testing is a victory for yDNA research and clarification of
lines, because studies demonstrate that my son, Jasper, is four markers
removed from other Newberry Co. BUTLER descendants in the short time span of
seven generations or less; that many markers off would be expected around 20
generations back.
Jasper's relation to other Newberry lines paternally is relatively distant,
although Henry b. 1822 is often mistakenly placed as a son of Henry and
Hetty (not Henrietta, but actually Hester per 1850 Newberry census; I have
found no official documents calling her Henrietta) BUTLER as a brother to
Mier J. BUTLER, from whom Jasper Fergus BUTLER also descends with maternal
influence. (See first outline.)
Hester "Hetty" (BUTLER) BUTLER was the daughter of Benjamin BUTLER and
Rachel PITTS. We are lucky to have the LWT of Hetty. No place in there is a
son named Henry mentioned with her nor in the 1850 Newberry census.
From "As I Find It" by Emma P. Ivey:
Page 172, Wills & Estates in Newberry County:
Hetty Butler- Exec Martin Butler Ref 284-108-2812. filed 7 Apr 1853. on
Martin, daughter Drucilla, sons Cary, Jackson, Myer. Wit: Rhesa Butler [her
brother], J. C. Davenport [perhaps Joseph (ca 1807-aft 1870), the
father-in-law of Rhesa's son, Bluford Rayford BUTLER, h/o Malinda Catherine
DAVENPORT], Benjamin Butler [this Benjamin is probably the son of Hester's
sister, Sarah BUTLER BUTLER, doubly related as he is the son of Hester's
husband's brother, Thomas BUTLER.] [This LWT does not account for two
daughters found in the 1830 census, but otherwise matches.] [My
explanations]
I suspect Henry b. 1822 is the son of this Henry as found in the 1830
Newberry County census and Henry would have been one of the younger sons:

After extensive research, I have not found this Henry referenced in any
genealogies. If my theory holds, this Henry would have been a first
generation BUTLER born after the 1766 move from Virginia to South Carolina.
The GOGGANS family book, Our Folk, refers to Henry b. 1822 as Henry Jr., and
this census entry supports that assertion.
