I do not know Master Acton's
first name, although I have seen somewhere else, that someone inserted (John) in
The names of those titled "Master" were likely the officers serving
under the Captain. As Master Acton was listed thirdly, he may have been an
officer junior grade. At that time in English history, officers were usually at
least of the Gentry class, sometimes aristocracy, that is why so many people,
including Raleigh, viewed Captain Francis Drake with contempt as a parvenu, as
his origins were not of this class. (Even 'though it is said that he was a
distant relative of some sort.)
