Although the Methodists have been an active part of the Marceline community since its founding in 1888, the present church edifice at the corner of Santa Fe and Kansas Avenues was erected in 1910 with the laying of the cornerstone in May of 1911. In 1916, the beautiful Filcher pipe organ, which is still in use today, was installed, The organ was reassembled and restored in 1958 following a remodeling project of the sanctuary. At that time, a new console was installed, and the organ was electrified. In November of 1956 a church remodeling program began under the leadership of Reverend J. V. Wheeler. This project drastically changed the interior design of the original building. Again in 1967 extensive remodeling was necessary as a consequence of a fire which damaged the church’s interior. A new $32,000 parsonage was constructed in 1969 at 105 West Huntoon Street. Reverend John Gooding was the pastor. Plans for a $140,000 educational wing were begun in 1978,completed in 1980, and dedication of the completed structure was held in 1981 during the ministry of David Norbury. Present membership at the Marceline United Methodist Church is 292 - 255 resident members and 37 non-resident. The Methodist ministers listed below have been a faithful group, serving the church and community in their own unique ways. |
