McDonald County was formed in 1849 from Newton County. It was originally named Seneca County, but later that same year was changed to McDonald County. It is surrounded by Newton County, Missouri; Barry County, Missouri; Benton County, Arkansas; Delaware County, Oklahoma; and Ottawa County, Oklahoma. The county seat is Pineville. The county was named for Alexander McDonald, a Revolutionary War soldier.
