Old Union Cemetery

OLD UNION CEMETERY, MERCER COUNTY, MO

Old Union Cemetery is located in section 12 of Madison township, in the southwest corner of Mercer County. It is just 1/2 mile north of the Grundy County line and is in a pasture on private property. The cemetery has not been maintained for several years and is now overgrown with brush, briars and tall grass. Many of the stones can no longer be found. From Modena, go south on blacktop A just over one mile to where the road makes a gradual "S" curve. Turn left (east) on the gravel road at the end of this turn and follow it a short distance to Brummitt (aka Prairie Ridge) Cemetery. The gravel road will circle the cemetery to the southeast, then will turn east and become a dirt road. This road is used almost exclusively by 4-wheel-drive vehicles and farm equipment and is rutted and washed out badly in many places (as of 2003). Old Union Cemetery is approximately 1/2 east and 1/4 south of this road. There is a gate that allows access to the cemetery through the pasture, but it is difficult to find if you don't know where to look. This list has been compiled from various sources including old surveys, burial records and family histories. It should not be considered a complete list of burials.
