County & USGenWeb
Information

My name is Tara R Barrett and I am the person responsible for New Madrid County. New Madrid District was one of the original five districts formed by the Spanish government when it assumed control in 1770. The other four were St. Louis, St. Charles, Ste. Genevieve, & Cape Girardeau. Eventually the districts became counties and many counties branched off from these original five districts. The first white settlers, two Canadian traders, Francois and Joseph LeSieur, came to the New Madrid district in 1783. New Madrid County was created in 1812. The county seat is New Madrid. Recorder of Deeds has marriage records, Clerk of Circuit Court had divorce records and Civil Court records and Probate Clerk has probate records.
