William Baylis was a captain in the Virginia line during the Revolutionary War. By the end of the war he was a lieutenant in the 8th Virginia Regiment. He is buried in the Baylis Cemetery, 1/2 mile north of Calhoun, Henry County, Missouri. The headstone at his grave was placed there by the Udolpha Miller Dorman Chapter DAR in 1916.

He also has an SAR insignia marker at his grave.
