2008 Governor's Humanities Book Award

Members of the Platte County Historical Society pose with the 2008 Governor’s Humanities Book Award the Society received Oct. 22, at a ceremony at the Governors Mansion in Jefferson City.  The Society won the award, sponsored by the Missouri Humanities Council.  The honor is in recognition of “The History of Platte County, Missouri, A Proud Legacy,” a book compiled by a group of historical society volunteers over a period of several years and which was published in the late summer of 2006.

The award was presented at a ceremony and “High Tea” held at the Missouri Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City on October 22, 2008.  The award recognizes “the accomplishments of people who have made exceptional contribution to our understanding of Missouri, its people, and its stories,” according to Megan-Marie Cahill, Development Officer for the Humanities Council, in a letter sent September 2 to the society. The book was nominated for the award earlier this year by Rosie Wade, PCHS recording secretary, who received word in September that the book was the award recipient.

The new, award-winning Platte County history book is still for sale. Use the book order form found elsewhere on this website to order a copy!  Buy your first copy, another copy, or give it as a Christmas gift!

Betty Soper Historical Award

Fall Meeting October 26, 2008

Robert Eckert poses with the 2008 Betty Soper Historical Award he received at the Fall Dinner meeting, held Oct. 26 at the Platte County Resource Center.  With him is the presenter, Diane Pepper, past PCHS president.  Each year the Betty Soper Platte County Historical Society Award is presented to a person who has displayed outstanding efforts in preserving the history, architecture , or genealogy of Platte County, Missouri.  Often times it is given to a person who serves behind the scenes and whose efforts are seldom seen by the general public.  That is the case with this year’s recipient.  It is with much gratitude to Robert Eckert that the  2008 Betty Soper Historical Award was presented to him for his dedication to the Platte County Historical Society, Platte City and Platte County, Missouri.  Robert Eckert has served on the Platte County Historical Society Board of Directors  for several years, was recording secretary for a while, and has been treasurer the past four years.  He also served for a while as recording secretary.  Robert brought PCHS into the 21st century by computerizing all of our financial records.   He tracks the income and expenses against the prior year, and provides the board with warning signals when money is running low and a fund raiser needs to be implemented. Robert and his late wife, Marjorie, or Marge to her friends, became residents of Platte County in 1959.  They both have served in the Platte City Christian Church, in their two children’s schools and many community events.  Marge served many years as a docent at the Ben Ferrel Platte County Museum.  Robert is active in the Platte City Lions Club.
