SOCIETY CELEBRATES 10 YEARS!

The Polk County Genealogical Society hosted guests July 28-29 at
the organization's library on the
southeast corner of the Bolivar square.
The open house celebrated the 10th anniversary of the PCGS and
the pending completion of renovations
to the main floor of the 90-year-old Carnegie library building.
The society was formed in 1994 within the Friends of the Library
and became an independent society in 1996.
The PCGS was incorporated in August 1999 and became a
not-for-profit corporation in January 2001. In October
of the same year, the PCGS bought the former Polk County Library
building and by July 2002, the ground floor was
renovated and opened.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic
Places a year ago.
A grant from the Delarue Trust in 2003 permitted renovations to
begin on the main floor. This year the society
received a state grant for preservation of government records.
"One of the society's goals has been to improve access to
primary source records and to increase
the availability of finding aids to further the work of
researchers in the pursuit of their family histories,"
PCGS President Susan Sparks stated. "This has been an
exciting project; some of the records to be housed
by PCGS in our facility have not been utilized by researchers for
many years because of their location or condition."
Hours at the genealogy library are from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on
Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
