If you OR your ancestors lived in Polk County, we WANT your STORY!
If you are a recent transplant to Polk County, we WANT your STORY!

Published in the Bolivar Herald-Free Press, page 1, 6 April 2011,
written by Charlotte Marsch,
www.bolivarmonews.com

Polk County Genealogical Society published the first Polk County Family Histories
book in 2004 and is preparing to publish a second family history book in 2012.

The book will be a compilation of family histories written by people who live in Polk County.

“It’s for people like me who didn’t get a story in the first book
and really wish I had,” said PCGS secretary Leta Gass.

It also is an opportunity for families that were included in the
first book to include updated information.

Story sections

The book will include three main sections.
(One story and picture submission is free, within the word count.)

Additional words over the word count limit listed for each section are 10 cents each.
One photo is included free with each story. Additional photos are $10 each.

• Family stories — Tell about your family in 500 words or less.

Susan Sparks, PCGS president, emphasized that anyone living in Polk County
now — even without a long history of family in the county — should submit a story.

“You don’t have to originate here,” she said. “If you are in Polk County today, you
are shaping Polk County’s history.”

• Military stories — Military stories are limited to 200 words.

“The focus is on people who have served from Polk County,” Sparks said.

• Century Farm stories — Word count limit is 300 words.

University of Missouri Extension gives this recognition to farms that have been
in the same family for 100 years or more. This section will feature
Century Farms in Polk County.

The book will be a limited edition!

To ensure receiving a copy, purchase it for the pre-publication price of $49.
Make checks or money orders payable to Polk County Genealogical Society Inc.
Books can be ordered online at
www.pcgsmo.com using PayPal.
(Stories CANNOT be submitted with PayPal book orders.
Must
be submitted separately.)

Submission guidelines

• Typed stories should be double-spaced. Digital copy — submitted on CD or via e-mail —
must be in Microsoft Word, Word Perfect or Word Pad format.
For Mac users, it needs to be a .doc, .txt or .rtf file.

• Type all names in full. Count all of the words and total them at the end of the article.

• Write the story in third person — he, she, they, them rather than I or we.

• Each story must be signed by the writer. Provide your name, address, phone
number and e-mail address to be used for verification if needed.

• Photos should be a professional copy, NOT a photocopy.

• Photos submitted on CD or via email need to be scanned at a minimum of 600 dpi,
unless the photo is larger than a 5x7, then 300 dpi is adequate.
Save it in a .TIF format (preferred) or a .JPG (in the largest file format possible).
Camera files need to be in large format, also.

Stories and photographs can be submitted three ways:

• In person at the PCGS Research Facility on the southeast corner of the
square in Bolivar, MO. Can be submitted in writing, typed copy or on CD.

• Via the U.S. Postal Service. Send to Polk County Genealogical Society Inc.,
Attn: History Book, PO Box 632, Bolivar MO 65613-0632.

• Via e-mail to info@pcgsmo.com.
