Minutes of the October 4, 2001 Meeting The Polk County Genealogical Society met for its regular monthly meeting on October 4, 2001 at the Fellowship Hall of the Bolivar United Methodist Church. The meeting was opened by President Susan Sparks. She spoke briefly about the OGS Conference in Springfield in September. A few of the members were at the PCGS booth at the conference. She also spoke about the upcoming Buffalo Head Prairie Festival in Dallas County which was to be the upcoming Saturday.
The meeting adjourned with 18 in attendance. Submitted by PCGS Secretary Linda Crawford Minutes of September 6, 2001 Meeting The Polk County Genealogical Society met for its monthly business meeting on Thursday, September 6, 2001 in the old parsonage of the Bolivar United Methodist Church instead of the Fellowship Hall. President Susan Sparks opened the meeting and passed around the minutes of the previous meeting.
Susan mentioned that the October meeting would be the time for the nomination of officers for the coming year. There were 16 present at the meeting. Submitted by Linda Crawford, PCGS Secretary. Minutes of July 12, 2001 Meeting Susan Sparks called the special business meeting to order. A sign-in sheet and the June Minutes were was passed around for signatures and approval. Fifteen attended the meeting. Lou Kemp took over the meeting to discuss the fund raising.
Evelyn Graham prepared a poster for public awareness. She and Marie went ahead and put some up today. Susan Sparks said she needs volunteers for the Heritage Festival, September 8. We will have a booth next to the Gazebo for fund raising activities. We will have things for sale and raffle items to raise funds there. Jennie Springer would like to sell the school books at this festival and earmark the funds for the library. It was announced that we will not be having a conference as was planned due to the conflict of time. Mildred will have the quilt ready for the raffle at that time. Treasurer Julie reported we are $3 short of $2000. On the first of July we had 93 members. Evelyn put together a computer loan agreement. This was passed around for everyone’s suggestion. It was brought up that we would need an equipment chairperson if we accepted this agreement. Susan will appoint a person for the position at a later date, so the computers can be put into use by the society. Membership lists were passed around. Bob Phillips announced that on 7th of August, the Sons of Confederate Veterans will be at North Ward Museum. The business meeting ended and the people went to do research. Candice Becker recording for Linda Crawford Minutes of the June 7, 2001 Meeting The Polk County Genealogical Society met for its regular monthly meeting on Thursday June 7, 2001 at 7:00 in the Fellowship Hall of the Bolivar United Methodist Church. President Susan Sparks opened the meeting. The member signup sheet and minutes of the previous meeting were passed around. Susan discussed the building purchase. Neva Charlene Gardner passed out cards about the fundraising. These cards were also mailed to those who could not attend the meeting. Neva also talked about the table and display she was setting up at the Bolivar High School Reunion that coming weekend. It was to promote the building campaign. Jennie Springer and Evelyn Graham reported on the computers that were given to us. They had driven to Tulsa to pick them up. These include desktop and laptop models. Secretary Linda Crawford volunteered to make a logo banner for the new building. The group decided on light blue fabric with dark blue lettering. It will be machine embroidered. Susan introduced the visitors and then people around the table introduced themselves. Several members were on vacation. Jennie reported on the tax levy promoted by Dean Polly. If approved by the Missouri General Assembly it would bring in funds for genealogical and historical societies. She also discussed the grant for a copy machine. A vote was taken to match funds for the machine. It passed unanimously. Also she told the group about the donations from member Bob Phillips. He donated lockers to be used in the library and also a scrapbook. Bob reported on his visitor who was working on the Moore family of Polk County. There were three new members at the meeting. Minutes of the March 1, 2001 Meeting The Polk County Genealogical Society met for its regular monthly meeting on March 1, 2001 in the Fellowship Hall of the Bolivar United Methodist Church. President Susan Sparks opened the meeting. Secretary Linda Crawford introduced the speaker for the evening Dr. Lyndon Irwin. His program was on research in the northern part of Germany. He is professor at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield. After the program Susan passed around the minutes of the previous meeting and also the sign-up sheet. Marie Clayton reported on the research she had done the past month. Julie Trout, treasurer, gave her monthly report. A list of cards to be sent out was given to Linda. They were for Thank You, Sympathy and Get Well cards. A letter from Tommy Morris in California was read concerning the obituaries that are printed in the local paper there and are about former local residents. Susan passed around sheets about what the group could do about our proposed library. The old public library which is now owned by the Matthews family was part of the discussion. It was brought to the attention of the group that the April meeting could not be held at the Bolivar Intermediate School as was planned. It was to be the program for the April meeting. A program will not be given for the April meeting and the computer assistance program will be held instead on April 12 as a research meeting. There was 23 in attendance. Submitted by Linda Crawford, Secretary of the PCGS Minutes of the February 1, 2001 Meeting The Polk County Missouri Genealogical Society met for its regular meeting on Thursday, February 1, 2001 in the Fellowship Hall of the Bolivar United Methodist Church. President Susan Sparks opened the meeting. The minutes of the previous meeting were passed around. Susan talked about the pictures we would be using in the calendars and cookbooks. Mark Sparks was there to scan pictures that had been brought to the meeting. Secretary Linda Crawford had contacted Dr. Lyndon Irwin of SMSU about presenting the March program. The group voted to have him speak on North German Research. This will be on March 1, 2001. Candice asked for input on the computer class which will be the program for the meeting on April 5 to be held at the middle school computer laboratory. Susan announced that the papers for tax exemption had been received. Jennie Springer explained more about the subject. It will make us a non-profit organization. Evelyn Graham gave the group an update on the computers the group had hoped to get free from a company who was obtaining new machines. Treasurer Julie Trout gave her monthly report and asked that someone else be put in charge of contacting the newspaper about the meetings. Linda Crawford volunteered to do this. Several quests were introduced. We also had some new members in attendance. There was 24 present at the meeting. The program consisted of several members bringing an article of genealogical interest for "show and tell." Susan dismissed the meeting. Submitted by secretary Linda Crawford. Minutes from the January 4, 2001 Meeting The Polk County Genealogical Society met for the regular business meeting on January 4, 2001 in the Bolivar United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. The meeting began with President Susan Sparks passing around the minutes of the previous meeting. Jennie Springer gave a report on the obituaries and donations to our library. She also reported the state papers have been approved for incorporation. A discussion was held on the calendar and cookbook. We are supposed to bring pictures and recipes to the February meeting. Treasurer Julie Trout gave the treasurer’s report. She also collected dues for the 2001 membership year. Jennie also addressed the group about the computer lab at the Bolivar Intermediate School. The group will meet April 5 at the lab. Susan explained about the ease of use of the Palm Pilot, especially for work in cemeteries. Laura Hoffer reported on funeral home records with an index dating back to 1928. Susan told about a book she bought from Hancock County, IL. It was an assessor’s book.
