Minutes of the August 5, 1999 Meeting

The Polk County Genealogical Society met for its regular meeting on August 5, 1999 at the Fellowship Hall of the Bolivar United Methodist Church. In the absence of the president Susan Sparks and the resignation of the vice president, the secretary Linda Crawford presided at the meeting.

The treasurer’s report was given by treasurer Bettyann Reed. We had two new members bringing our membership to 55.

Julie Trout reported on the the Obituary Coding system being used by many newspapers. This makes it possible to know when and where the obituary was posted.

Marie Clayton reported on mail received which included queries to be done.

Discussions were held for both the Ozarks Genealogical Society Conference and our own conference which are both to be held in September. Volunteers are needed for both dates.

A discussion was also held about the use of the old library when it is vacated. There is a possibility it could be used as a county archive with the genealogical society using some of the space for our library in exchange for helping at the archives.

There was also a report on the collection of genealogy books and supplies given by Mrs. Mary Elliott when her husband passed away. Jennie made a report on extra supplies from the Mercantile Bank which might be of use to our group.

A reminder was given by Linda for Susan that we must be thinking about the election and new bylaws that would be brought up at an upcoming meeting.

Instead of having a program, members were asked to bring along a source that they thought had been a help in their search for their ancestors. These were displayed and discussed.

Linda Crawford, Secretary, acting for President Susan Sparks.

The Polk County Genealogical Society met for its regular monthly meeting at the Polk County Library on Thursday March 11, 1999. The meeting was opened by the president Susan Sparks. New mail was read. Jennie Springer and Candice Becker discussed the work on the obituaries. Jennie also spoke about getting a copy machine for our own use.

A discussion was held on how to redo the query sheet for those requesting help. We planned a New Membership packet to be sent to all people joining the group. Instead of a program, members worked on their own research or helped others who were researching and needed help.
