Siegel Cemetery Work Day
Recently a few ladies visited the Siegel Cemetery in Ray County and found it in need of a good cleaning and
repair. Below is an email from Denise announcing a Work Day. If you would like to contact Denise by telephone please
email me. morcga@yahoo.com (Lisa)
For more information email Denise at pandachickenmama@gmail.com
We have set the workdate for the Siegel Cemetery restoration project as Saturday September 19th from 10 am to
2 or 3 pm or whenever you have to leave. Our rain date will have to be in November due to other scheduling
conflicts.
I won't know yet if the cemetery will be mowed before we get there or if we should plan on doing it ourselves.
Perhaps someone that lives close by will donate this!
Here are some ideas for supplies needed to make the day more pleasant:
Work gloves
Weed wackers
Hand pruners/ trimmers
Shovels
Poison Ivy spray (someone has mentioned they will pay for/donate this item)
Riding mower (if not already done)
Don't forget the Bug spray and Sunscreen! If there's an interest, maybe we could have a picnic lunch there, otherwise,
it will be a bring-your-own.
If there is time and interest, we would like to map out the cemetery.
We have a list of the headstones that was done in 1972, but there is not a map of the cemetery to tell who is where.
As this was a family cemetery for over a hundred years, all the rows aren't straight and has a hap-hazard appearance
in some areas.
Donations are needed for the yearly mowing of the cemetery, as I am told the balance is at zero. There is a sign
in the cemetery of where to send donations to, but it is sorely neglected, and is posted in the center of the cemetery.
If we can get one posted out by the road, it might increase donations as well.
And speaking of signs, someone has offered to paint some for the cemetery. There isn't anything to mark what cemetery
this is, and for out of town people dropping by to pay respects to their relatives, it would be a nice addition.
There is no fence or gate on the north side with the stairs, but there are two metal posts that are on either
side of the stairs. I don't know what the dimensions are, or how one would connect a sign between the two posts
at the top, but maybe someone clever can suggest how and we can get it made and put up.
Please feel free to invite others to come help! The more, the merrier! Boy scouts, girl scouts, 4-Hers all have
community service projects and this could be used to fulfill those requirements.
Thanks for your interest and help!
