The Battle of Marshall was fought Oct. 13, 1863. The day-long battle pitted approximately 1,800 Federals, commanded by Brig. Gen. Egbert B. Brown, against a force of about 1,200 Confederate raiders led by Col. Joseph Shelby.
During the course of the battle, Union forces attempted to encircle and divide Shelby's troops, but the wily Confederate commander and his raiders fought their way out of the entrapment and withdrew in two columns.
The Battle of Marshall was the culminating event of Shelby's 1863 raid into Missouri from Southern Arkansas.*

The Ridge Park Cemetery, Marshall, serves as the final resting place for many Confederate veterans.
In 1952, feeling the need to recognize the Saline County soldiers as well as all the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Marshall, the chapter placed a monument in the cemetery.
The stately granite stone commemorates the battle. It also lists the names of the Confederate soldiers from Saline County who are buried in Ridge Park Cemetery
