Brittney Bishop Retracing our Footsteps in Missouri To raise funds to purchase one of thirty-one interpretive granite markers in the walkway leading to the Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield | Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, a unit of the National Park System, preserves the site of the first major battlefield of the Civil War in the West.
On a broiling hot August 10, in 1861, the first important battle after Bull Run erupted ten miles southwest of Springfield. The two armies - more than 12,000 Confederates and 5400 Federals - fought in the fields and on the hills bordering Wilson’s Creek. Six hours of intense fighting left extremely high casualties on the battlefield. The confederate victory on August 10, 1861, focused national attention on the war in Missouri, leading to greater federal military action. The 2003-2004 M.S.S.C.A.R. President's State Project purchased one of thirty-one interpretive granite markers in the walkway leading to the Visitor Center. These markers commemorate the 31 significant historical events leading up to and following the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. Brittney raised a total of $784. $250 was used to purchase the Wilson's Creek marker and the rest went toward M.S.S.C.A.R. scholarships. Great job Brittney!!
