Missouri State CAR President's Project 2005-2006 :
Samantha Comer StateTheme: Honor the Corps of Discovery State Project: To raise funds for the bronze statue of the Lewis and Clark Expedition at the Missouri State Capitol. | Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Capitol Monument Park
Jefferson City, Missouri is one of four state capital cities on the Missouri River and the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. While we have individual statues of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark circa 1924 inside the Missouri State Capitol building, there are none outdoors in our City of Thomas Jefferson; nor do they show other members of the team that made up the Corps of Discovery. ![]() The idea for an outdoor bicentennial monument park on the capitol grounds and near the historic Jefferson Landing surfaced in late July 2001, when a table top bronze maquette of a new heroic size Lewis & Clark monument in Kansas City’s Case Park arrived in the city. That maquette currently is on display at the Governor’s Mansion. A little later the Task Force identified the perfect outdoor location in view of the Missouri River. Missouri sculptor Sabra Tull Meyer knew just where it should go and was inspired to take on a project that would include not only Lewis and Clark, but other important members of their Corps of Discovery, George Drouillard, York and Seaman. Samantha raised a total of $1519 and $679.67 went toward the Lewis & Clark Statue and the rest went toward M.S.S.C.A.R. scholarships. Samantha also was recognized with a Gold Award - State Presidents Guidelines Winner by N.S.C.A.R. Great job Samantha!! |
