The Civil War
As it relates to St. Clair County, Missouri

OLIVER H. P. BURCH

Oliver H.P. Burch was born in Rives Co. (now St. Clair), Missouri. On the 1850 & 1860 census, Oliver is living in the household of James M. & Mary Ann Brackenridge.

1840 Rives Co., MO census list two Burch households: John Burch and Robert Burch. Comparing the 1840 census data to 1850, Mary Ann was either the daughter, or the daughter-in-law, of Robert Burch.

Robert Burch was apparently widowed at the time of his death in 1850. His children, judging by 1850 St. Clair Co., MO households were: Mary Ann (Daughter – or daughter-in-law), born 1822 VA; married James M. Brackenridge and had son Thomas R. Brackenridge and possibly son Oliver H.P. Burch, and daughters Eve Rebecca and Margaret V. Brackenridge; Alfred L., born 1828 VA who married Sarah and had children Robert James and Jane; Benjamin F., born 1832 VA and had son Oliver; Jane, born 1830 VA; Miranda, born 1834 Va; and Roancy, born 1836 VA. There were probably others not accounted for in St. Clair County.

From early census data, the family of John Burch was: wife Magdalene; children: William W., Alfred, Almira, Green L., Caroline V. William and Alfred were born in Indiana, the rest were born in Missouri.

Oliver appears to have been either the son of Mary Ann (Burch) Brackenridge, or a much younger brother. He married 1st – Martha Adeline McLain in 1869. She died in 1894 and Oliver married 2nd – Fannie B. [?] about 1895. Martha Adeline and son Austin D. are buried in Pleasant Grove cemetery. Oliver and wife Fannie B. are not listed in St. Clair County cemetery records.
