Ste. Genevieve Herald
Ste. Genevieve, Mo.
Saturday, June 10, 1882

Mr. Henry L. CALDWELL, formerly of St. Mary, arrived Thursday night per steamer Emma C. Elliot.

Mrs. F.C. ALBERT received a new lot of coffins, of latest styles and all sizes. The glass top is a new feature in Ste. Genevieve. Prices very low.

The fight about the St. Louis Collectorship is getting interesting. Col. LONG, a Democrat, being favored by Gen. GRANT. Cavender supported by the Missouri Republicans, and Col. ST. GEM, opposed by Southeast Missouri, it is to be wondered that the latter has made so long a stand. But what with a petition against him from Perryville, and a very caustic letter against him by B. Benson CAHOON, of Fredericktown, it is almost certain that Col. ST. GEM will not be reappointed.

Mr. VENNOR now predicts that we will have a nice bit of broiling weather about midsummer, but as a whole he maintains that the season will be cool and refreshing.

Corpus Christi will be celebrated at St. Joseph's church in the German Settlement to-morrow. As usual there will be a splendid procession with the customary out door alters, flowers, decorations and all the paraphernalia of a church festival.

Mrs. VORST paid a visit to St. Louis this week. Joe told her not to come back too soon, but we know a thing or two. We never saw a man more interested in steamboat whistles than Joe, and that means that he was waiting for somebody.

Hon. A.C. DODGE and wife, of Burlington, Iowa, arrived here last Tuesday evening on a visit to their relatives and friends. We are pleased to state that the General is looking well, and as usual his visit to his native town is greeted as heartily as ever.

Mr. BAUM's little one year old girl fell so violently upon the floor last Tuesday as to fracture her arm. The poor little sufferer had hardly got over the effects of a severe scalding by a vessel of hot milk which she had tried to take from the stove a short time ago.
