James Shelton Erwin was born Nov. 24, 1844 in Daviess County, Ky. to Joseph Hutchinson and Emily (Shipley) Erwin. James
married Melissa Welch, daughter of James and Mary Ann Welch, on Dec. 21, 1871 in Daviess Co. Ky. They are both buried
in Stoddard County at the Kindred Cemetery. James was a farmer and came to Stoddard County just before the turn of the
century with at least six children born in Ky.
1. Etha was born in Mar. of 1875 and she married, Phillp Gregory Duncan. 2. Robert Shelton was born in March of 1879, he married Lucy Triplet. 3. Daniel was born in Aug. of 1881 and he married Edith Furguson. 4. Wildy was born in 1884 and she married Herman Smith. 5. Sanford was born July, 29, 1887. he married Gerta Weedman. 6. Hanford was the twin of Sanford being born July, 29, 1887. He married Rosa Jane Ross daughter of Rev.James Franklin and Celia Ross late of Pike county, Indiana, Jan.8, 1913. Hanford and Rosa were farmers in Stoddard County. Rosa died first on June 3, 1936 giving birth and Hanford died Mar. 8, 1976. They are both buried at the Essex Cementery. They had five children that grew to adulthood. 1, Veneta was born Mar. 9, 1916 and died in Reseda, Ca. Oct. 2000. She married Linn Carothers of Kansas City, Kanasas. 2. Christine M. was born in 1918. 3. Deloris was born July 31, 1922 and married William Henry Stevens of Parma, Missouri. She died Feb.12, 2007 in Stoddard County. 4. Junior Hanford was born on Aug. 7, 1925 and died Nov. 21, 2000 in Kansas City, Mo. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. 6. James Arthur was born Oct. 25 1926. He married Mary Callender of Toronto, Canada on Feb, 2, 1952 in Lompoc, Ca. He served in the 24th Inf. Div. of the U.S. Army in WWII and Korea. He died Sept. 17, 1986 in San Bernadino County, Ca.
