WALTER STONEWALD JACKSON HOWELL was born nov. 11.1880, near
Kenton, TN,
in Obion County. Walter was the eldest of three son born to
John W. and
"Sudie" Susan Howell.
The Family moved to Stoddard County MO sometime in 1892. As a
young man,
Walter worked mostly in the sawmills handling cypress and gum
logs. On
Dec. 18, 1901, Walter married Lelie Ida Smith at the home of
Walter's
parents, with John Childres, as Justice of the Peace performing
the
ceremony. Lelie Smith was born Nov. 4, 1881, the daughter of
James
William Swamp Bill) Smith and Lula Eva Walker. At the time of
her
marriage to Walter, Lelie was teaching school at what was known
as the
Smith School. Lelie left school early on the day of her
weddingto meet
Walter, the couple had to walk amile and a half through deep
snow to the
Howell house. T.C. "Doc' Howell, Walter's brother was left
in
charge of the students at the schoolhouse. He took them rabbit
hunting
and then dismissed them for a vacation from Wednesday afternoon
until
following Monday. Walter and Lelie made their homewith his
parents for
the first six months of their marriage. They then moved to a
sawmillwhere Lelie cooked for boarders while Walter worked at
the mill.
They lived at the mill until the arrival of their twins, Ruth
and Rubert
on Sept. 2, 1902. After leaving the sawmill, the Howell's moved
into a
house that had been remodeledfrom the former schoolhouse where
Lelie had
taught. Walter farmed the land, then owned by the Jackson Land
Company.
He farmed it in the summer and logged in the winter, using a
hitch of
eight oxen to remove the large cypress logs from the swamp.
Oxen were
used because horses and mules were not able to stand up under
the strain
of the swamp. The logger often worked in water up over their
boot tops.
Walter useran eight foot long whip with a four foot handle to
persuade
the oxen, it also came in handy for combating snakes. Family
stories
have been told about Walterbeing able to snip the head off a
snake as far
as eight feet away. Walter and Lelie lived and worked in the
swamp for
several years and then moved to a farm one and one half miles
east of the
town of Bernie. Then in 1946 they moved to their final home in
Bernie.
There were a total of eleven children born to this union. Lelie
Ida
smith Howell passed away may 16,1968 and Walter Stonewald
Jackson Howell
passed away May21, 1968 just five days later. Both are buried
in the
Bernie Cemetery.
I am still looking for more information on John and
"Sudie"
Howell as to birthdays, place of births and so on.
Walter and Lelie were my grandparents.
Also, at least three different spellings of Lelie's first name
have
appeared on different legal documents, ie,
Lelie, Lele, and Lelah.

Here's what I'm trying to find out:
Spencer Judson SHAKE (b. 1-16-1860, Warren Co. Iowa) and Mary
Rebecca BROOKS
(b.5-10-1857, Carroll Co., TN) were married on 11-25-1880
according to a
family Bible. I'm trying to establish a location for the
marriage and find
a record of it. According to the same Bible, three of their
children were
born in Stoddard Co., Missouri, so I am wondering if the
marriage took place
there also. The children are: Hallie Mae (b. 1-11-1882), Lucy
Lavina (b.
1-21-1884) and Clarence Arthur (b. 4-1-1886)
I'd love to get any information re the Shake's marriage, or
official
confirmation of the births of their children in Stoddard Co.,
and would
willingly pay for copying costs of course.

<Abraham Byrd, s/o Amos and Clara (Ruddle) Byrd, was born 3
Dec
1772, in North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Gillispie in
Tennessee, and they moved, along with many other family members,
to Missouri, which was then called "Upper Louisiana."
They
settled on land near what became known as Byrd Creek at the
Byrd Settlement in what was eventually called Byrd township of
Cape Girardeau County. Abraham died there 22 June 1857. I am
interested in learning more about Abraham and his family while
they lived in Missouri. Elizabeth was a charter member of the

Byrds to "Upper Louisiana" were the Russell, Hays, and

Surnames:BLACK,ALLEN
My great grandfather was named Allison Mitchell Black and was
from Cape Girardea County, Mo. He moved to Union County, IL,
across the Mississippi River from Cape and was an assor by trade.
He had a brother named John Black, who served in the Union Army
in the civil war. Their parents were named William Black and
Anna Allen and were married in 1830 in Cape Girardeau County. I
have no further information about either Anna or William Black,
nor can I find the place of birth for Allison. Any help on any
of the above names or lines will be appreciated.

DOWDY, RIDDLE.... I am looking for information on the children
and
descendants of
Thomas and Eliza DOWDY who migrated to Stoddard County around
1844.
Thomas died
in the late 1850's and Eliza apparently remarried to Frederick
MILLER.
Also looking for data on Eliza's parents who were Charles and
Christina
RIDDLE.
They migrated to Stoddard County around the same time. My
ancestor is
Green
DODWY, second son of Thomas & Eliza. Thomas DOWDY's brother,
Armstead L. DOWDY,
also migrated to Stoddard County, and many of his children are
buried in
the family cemetery
near Dexter. Whereabout of Thomas & Eliza's graves is
unknown as is
what
happened to any of the other children. Any help
appreciated.</B>
