Mark Lee Caton was born March 6, 1862 to William S.
and Malissa Jane (Blevins) Caton. On March 11, 1885, he married
Lilla Overstreet, daughter of
William S. and
Lucinda (Bass) Overstreet. Two children were born to them:
William S. Caton, December 16, 1885
Ida B. Caton, December 10, 1887
Mark Caton was a farmer in Bacon Township of Vernon
County in the 1870 census; and by 1900 he had moved his family to Rio
Grande County, Colorado, where he continued to farm.
Nancy Caton,
great-granddaughter of Mark Caton, provides this additional information:
Mark Caton became ill in Colorado, having moved there sometime following
Ida's death in 1896. Mark's son William S. Caton drove a covered
wagon with all their belongings and his Mother back to Missouri, while
Mark took the train. This would have been maybe 1902-3 (?) and
Grandfather (William Caton) would have been 17 or 18 years old. I
heard that story directly from Grandfather, and again from my Dad and
Dad's sister. By 1910, Mark was dead and Lilla and Grandfather
were back in Missouri.
