How to Request Vernon County Paid Research

Local genealogy society volunteers conduct lookups and limited Vernon County research on behalf of the society at the following rates, paid in advance.  Research fees are used to procure additional genealogical resources for our local public libraries.  Please note that we do not accept research requests via email.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLE LOOKUPS - $5 when event date is known (month, day, and year); e.g., obituary, marriage announcement, birth announcement, etc.  The fee covers searching; if an article is located, it will be copied and mailed at no additional charge.

MARRIAGE RECORD LOOKUPS - $1 each; include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.  Send marriage record lookups to Recorder's Office, 100 West Cherry Street, Nevada, MO  64772.  Give the names and date or approximate date of the marriage.  Be sure to include $1 for each requested record and a stamped, self-addressed envelope.  Make checks payable to Vernon Co. Recorder's Office.  Please see online indexes for 1855-1960 marriages at this link.

COPY OF ARTICLE FROM MICROFILMED NEWSPAPER - $5 each.  Provide the 1) year and name of the newspaper as listed in the abstracted newspaper book index, 2) the name of the individual, and 3) the page number.  See the online newspaper indexes at this link (This does not include the "Birth & Death Notices from Nevada Newspapers 1883-1893 Index.")

PAGE FROM "Birth & Death Notices from Nevada Newspapers 1883-1893 Index" - $5 for the first and $3 for each additional page ordered at the same time from this book.  This is for a copy of the abstracted information in the book and is not a copy of the original newspaper article; we do not lookup original articles from this abstracted book because the specific newspaper is not indicated.  See this index at this link.

If you can place your family in Vernon County and would like to have research conducted, please send specific detailed information on the family, the extent of research you would like to have done, and the fee.  A minimum 2-hour fee ($20) is required to begin general research.  If the desired information is found in less than one hour, the second hourís fee will be refunded to you.  If additional research time is necessary, you will be advised and your approval obtained before the additional research is conducted.

When requesting general research, please provide us with a list of what information you already have on the individual(s) so we will not duplicate that, and we can "see" what this family looks like and know where to look and what records or additional information might be found here.  It will help our researchers if you will also list where you have found them in the U.S. Federal census by including census year(s), location(s) and how the name was spelled.

Society members who conduct research on behalf of the Society are usually at the Library one day a week.  Research requests are handled in the order in which they are received.  Please allow 2-4 weeks for the research to be conducted.
