Osages, Bushwhackers, Etc.:  Self-guided Historical Tours of Vernon County, Missouri

Researched by members of the Vernon County Historical Society; compiled and edited by Patrick Brophy.  Vernon County boasts as rich a history as any county in the Midwest.  In all too many cases, the historian can only point to an empty spot and lament, “This is where it once was.”  Many of Vernon County’s former communities—spots that once boasted stores, schools, churches, lodges, and even a vibrant local life—few traces can now be found.  Such “ghost towns” are included simply for the sake of completeness because in our experience, former residents or their descendants are often deeply interested.  Paperback, 60 pages, photos, maps, 5½x8¼.

Bushwhackers of the Border: The Civil War Period in Western Missouri

First published in 1980, Bushwhackers of the  Border has been fully rewritten.  A summary and appraisal, not an exhaustive account, it offers no new “facts,” merely a fresh commonsense look at the “facts” already in our possession.  A best-seller in First Edition!  All newly rewritten 100 pages, illustration, maps, 5½x8½.. Winner of Author’s Award 1996-97 State Historical Society of Missouri.

Past Perfect: The Tales of Town and ‘Round

By Patrick Brophy.  For perhaps too long, this obviously unreconstructed, non-expert, crotchety, contrary, “old timer” has inflicted his local and regional history scribbling on the longsuffering Nevada Daily Mail and its readers.  Oddly, they do read and even seem to enjoy it.  Now the best of the crop, some 75 essays, all fully rewritten and improved, plus some never before seen, have been gathered under one cover.  Winner of Author’s Award 1996-97 State Historical Society of Missouri.  Quality paperback, full color cover, 375 pages, 60 photos, maps, index, 5½x8¼
