JAMES ANDERSON CLAXTON was born September 18, 1798 in ANDERSON CO, TN, and died October 06, 1871 in WRIGHT CO, MO; 1850 Bedford Co TN; s/o James CLAXTON and Sarah HILLOMS, James served in the War of 1812 Company muster roll for 4th Regiment of Capt. John Brock's Company of  East Tennessee Drafted Militia, commanded by Col. Samuel Bayles. Joined Nov. 13, 1814  and  was kept on the muster roll until May 18, 1815. He died Feb. 11, 1815. He served 3 months and 4 days and was paid 25 dollars and 6 cents according to the company pay roll. He was a private. From National Archives; James Claxton was s/o William CLAXTON  b 12 Jan 1754 in VA, and d in VA.  He married 1772 in NEW KENT CO VA  to MARY ANN ANDERSON b 1755; James Anderson CLAXTON  m 26 April 1819 in SHELBYVILLE, BEDFORD CO TN to  TEMPERANCE A. RATCLIFF  b 22 June 1801 in NC and died 1 Nov 1877 in Wright Co MO. military service record for James Anderson CLAXTON from the National Archives: War of 1812 Bounty Land Warrant Application. He claimed he served in Capt. James Byrns Company, William Dyers Regiment of TN Cav and enlisted at Fayetteville, Lincoln Co TN on or about Jan 1815 and was discharged on or about 4 July 1815 at Columbia, Maury Co TN. He filed a claim for a pension but was rejected on the grounds that he served from 31 Jan 1818 to 3 July 1818 which was after the peace was declared.

He was called “Uncle Mike”; he never married. He lived with his brother, John Wesley and family. He owned a lot of land and was considered a rich landowner in his day. He was a very strong man and a hard worker. He used to carry a lead bullet in his mouth and chew on it to keep from craving water. He only drank when he watered his horses. He said he could bind as much wheat as two men could cradle. Uncle Mike was about five feet six inches tall and wore a number five shoe. During the Civil War he served in the 73rd Enrolled Missouri Militia on the Union side.  See Wright County History Book II;
