GROCE, MAX OTTO
Max Otto Groce, son of Willis Otto and Cora Belle Hildreth Groce, was born
December 23, 1915 at Byrdstown, TN and departed from this life November
4, 1987 at St. John's Regional Health Center, Springfield, at the age of
71 years, 10 months and 11 days. Max received his education at Byrdstown
and Tennessee Tech at Cookeville, TN, where he graduated with a Teachers
Certificate. He taught elementary education in the rural schools in TN.
In March of 1939 he moved to Texas to engage in farming. June 1, 1940 he
was united in marriage to Winona Womack. At Petersburg TX, they started
their family of two daughters and two sons. During the drought of 1951
they moved to Missouri to continue farming. Upon their arrival in October
of that year, they discovered the drought had followed them to Missouri.
Max continued farming, but sought outside work. He worked at Jerry Broyles
Milling Co., Murl Moody Service Station and later Roy Pedersen Service
Station, retiring from Hartville Schools as custodian at retirement age,
but continued part-time employment as custodian at Laclede Electric a few
years. Max was very aware of his neighbors and fellowman. Her served many
years on the Hartville School Board, worked with the Chamber of Commerce
and helped develop the Hartville Horse Show. The Horse Show continues to
use his field for parking each year. He was a member of the Independent
Order of Odd Fellows, Lodge No. 226, Hartville. Twelve years ago Max suffered
a serious heart ailment. He curtailed his many activities somewhat. Instead
of paddling the boat fishing, he was waiting on the bank ready to cook
fish. Instead of barbecuing standing at the old-fashioned pit following
his friends' hunting trips, he now would sit on a stool at a modern grill.
Instead of feeding the cattle while Winona drove the pickup, now he drove
while Winona attempted to say in the pickup and pitch feed to his loved
white-face cattle. And now--after his last bout with physical ailments
he has curtailed his activities once again to the FINAL REWARDS of a life
lived freely for his family and fellowman. He will be missed by his family
and many friends, but each will be able to recall a vivid, happy, humorous,
memory of Max Otto Groce. His physical presence is absent, but his spiritual
presence will always be a comfort. He is survived by his wife, Winona;
two daughter Mrs. Maxona Lawler, Hartville and Mrs. Joyce Lindsey, Austin
TX; two sons Charles Richard Groce, Bovey MN and Arnold Otto "Butch" Groce,
Lebanon; two sisters Mrs. Sally Robertson, Petersburg, TX and Mrs. Vera
Maw Mullins, Byrdstown, TN; a brother Rae Groce of Petersburg TX; four
grandchildren, Anthony and Rachell Lindsey, Austin TX and Ronda and Richard
Groce, Lebanon; and sever nieces and nephews.
