In
the fall of 1872, Joseph W. PRINDLE was sharing MOTTS SPRING, with John
B. BENNET, the spring was on BENNET'S property. PRINDLE was away,
working on the railroad, when he came home his wife, Lizie, told him "Bennet
won't let us have no more water out of Motts Spring". Thus Joseph W. PRINDLE
took the gun down off the wall and went down the hill in front of his house,
crossed the branch at the Motts Spring and up the hill on the other side
to Bennet's house. He confronted BENNET about refusing the Mrs. PRINDLE
water from Motts Spring and a very heated argument followed, Joseph W.
PRINDLE turned to go back down the hill toward Motts Spring, when he was
almost to the foot of the hill south of the Mott Spring, John B. BENNET
shot him, and he fell dead.
Young
Joseph E. PRINDLE, who was about 15 years old at the time, had been out
working, when he returned that evening, he found his mother in tears, she
told him "Your Papa was shot by BENNET and he is dead"..., young Joseph
E. PRINDLE took the hand gun and went to the BENNET house, he was told
that the Constable had taken BENNET over to Judge J.L. STAFFORD's (Dutch
STAFFORD) house. Proceeding across the field a mile or so to the
STAFFORD home, young PRINDLE flung open the door and had aim on John B.
BENNET with the hand gun, when someone grabbed his arm and the gun went
off and shot through the roof. They talked young PRINDLE into going
back to be with his mother, Lizie, and upon arriving home, the family buried
Mr. Joseph W. PRINDLE in his front yard, mounding it up with field rocks.
In the late 1960's or early 1970's a bulldozer was working this area and
scattered the pile of rocks, but it is visible where the grave was located
(Apr 1981).
A
country lane has been cut right through this area and the grave is on the
south side of the lane, on the north side of the fence.
John
B. BENNET was indicted for murder in the spring term of Webster Co MO court
1873. He was taken to Marshfield to the County Jail. He knew
he would surely hang for murdering Joseph W. PRINDLE. After residing
in the jail for a while, he decided rather than be convicted and most certainly
hanged, he made a plan with his wife, Polly, and on her next visit to the
Webster Co Jail, she took him some poison, and he drank it and soon after
was dead. They took his body home and buried him under a walnut tree
in his front yard on the hill south of Motts Spring.
Polly
was a young widow, 20 years younger than her husband, John B. BENNET.
Polly (Mary A.) BROWN was born about 1844, the dau/o William BROWN
and Harinah (JOHNSON?) 1860 Webster Co MO.
Being
a very attractive woman, and knowing it, she flaunted herself around, at
one particular time, saying she would "Marry any handsome man who would
come to her cabin on Sunday afternoon and eat cake with her." --------
"Uncle
Billy" Alcorn, a widower with some children, went a callin' on Sunday afternoon
and soon they were married. The boys, Ross and Ned, resented
their new stepmother and gave her a hard row to hoe. One day Polly
followed Ross upstairs and they got into an argument and Ross pushed her
and she fell down the steps. Well, when her husband, Billy ALCORN,
came home, he sided with the boys and poor pretty Polly felt left out,
so she packed her trunk and left him.
Soon
after, she took up with Bartlow TRIMBLE, after their marriage Bartlow and
Polly BROWN BENNET ALCORN TRIMBLE moved to Tulsa OK, where they lived out
the rest of their lives.
