Henry Horn Rayborn
Born August 1826/27 in TN, died Sept. 22, 1918 and is buried in Green Mountain Cemetery.  He was a Pvt. in Co. H, 8th Mo. Cav.

John Reason
Born in TN and age 31 according to the 1860 census for Wright Co., MO.  He was a Pvt. in MO.

Daniel J. Reasoner
Born Jan. 1834 in Ohio. Died 1912.  He was in Co. E, 13th Ind. Vol. Inf.

William Edmond Reaves
Born Sept. 15, 1844 in AR.  Died Jan. 13, 1903 and is buried in Murr Cemetery, Texas Co. MO.  He was age 15 according to the Wright Co. MO census.  He served from August 22, 1864 to July 1, 1865.

Isaac W. Redman
Born Oct. 1824 in WV.  He was in Co. B, 7th VA Inf. 7/8/1861 to 22/7/1865. Isaac Wolverton Redman was born 23 Oct 1826 in Hardy Co. WV.  He served in Co. B and 7th VA Vols.  Died 7 June 1912.  Burial in Friendship Cemetery. (Info from Ted Stout)

George Reese
Born March 20, 1842 in Mo.  Died March 28, 1897 and is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.  He was a Pvt., in Co. E, 8th Mo. Cav., 2-8/1862 to 12/8/1865.  In Oct. 1863 his home was burned by bushwhackers.  George was shot and left for dead.  His brother-in-law, Thomas Eli Todd, was killed by the attackers.  George was discharged from the army at St. Louis, Mo.

Wesley Reese
He was wounded in the right shoulder during the war.

Philip F. Retherford
Pvt. Co. B, 5th TN Inf., 22/3/1862 to 18/4/1863.  He is buried in Thomas Cemetery.  He died in 1877.

Born in VA and age 38 according to the 1860 census for Wright Co., MO.  He was in Co. H, 8th MO State Militia Cav.

Robert Rich
Born, Dec. 1842 in Tenn. died 1918 and is buried in the Wolf Creek cemetery. He was a Pvt. in Co. B, or I, 1st Tenn. Inf.

Griffiths Richard
Born, April 14, 1831. Died, March 14, 1913 and is buried in the Friendship cemetery. He was in Co. H, 5th Ohio Cav. 1861 to 1865.

Samuel Lasley Richards
Born Dec. 20 1819. Died Nov 5, 1890 and is buried in the Astoria cemetery. He was a Pvt in Co. I, 3rd Tenn. Cav. Aug 1, 1862 to July 4, 1865.  Born in TN, died Nov. 5, 1896 after being shot.  He married Maleney (Lena) Crisp (b. 1830 NC) on Feb. 15, 1848 in Maryville TN.  They had 3 children John, Sarah and Andrew.  After the Civil War, the family moved to Wright County MO from Blount County TN.  John is the only child known to live to adulthood and marry.---Debra Richards Toms, great-great-granddaughter

Born, July 5, 1843. Died March 31, 1913 and buried in the Mansfield cemetery. He was in Co. F., 16th Mo. Cav., 8/7/1864 to 6/30/1865. He was a member of the Chester A. Arthur Post 299 of the GAR.

James Harvey Robinett
Born May 25, 1827. Died Aug 6, 1881 and is buried in the Robinett cemetery. He raised and commanded the Wright Co. Home Guards with the rank of Capt. The Company fought in the skirmish at Mountian Grove, Mo. in 1862. He was a Sgt. in the 8th Mo. State Militia 1862 to 1863. While at home on leave he was captured by bushwhackers and taken to Arl. He escaped and returned to Mo. He was sheriff of Wright Co. 1863 to 1865 and Associate judge, Wright Co. court 1870 to 1872.

Gilbert J. Roote
Pvt., Co. H, 20th Mo. Inf. Vol's. He was a member of Post No. 10-R. S. Canby, Rich Hill of the GAR. He organized the Chester A. Arthur Post 299 of the GAR and was the first member enrolled. He was commander of the Post since its formation.

John Royster
Born Nov. 3, 1831 in TN.  Died April 3, 1890 and is buried in the Kincheloe Cemetery.  He enlisted in Co. B, 46th Reg. Mo. Inf. in August 1864 and was promoted to Cpl, in September.  He was mustered out in March 1865.

Samual L. Russell

Samuel S. Russell
Born 1844 in Ala. died 1923 and is buried in the Hillcrest cemetery. He was a Pvt in the 74th Enrolled Mo. Militia.  Obit lists him as Samuel L. while cemetery record lists him as Samuel S.   He was born Sept. 8, 1884 in Jackson Co. AL and died Jan 25, 1923 in Mountain Grove, MO.  Family first moved to Hannibal, MO then to Wright County about 1883.  Samuel built and operated a flour mill here.  He married Margaret C. Claxton about 1869 and they had 5 children: Arthur E., James E., Viola, Thomas S. and Essie.  In 1886 he married Mary A. Stigall and they had 4 children: Walter C., Eula, Ruth and Ray.  Ray died in childhood.

Joseph Ryan
Born, Dec 1843 in Ken. Died, 1937. He enlisted on Oct 20, 1861 as a Pvt. in Co. K 12th Ken. Inf., 10/20/1861 to 11/20/1864.

Thomas Ryan
Born 1836. Died 1888. He was a Pvt. in Co. K 12th Ken. Inf. Vol's. He enlisted Jan 22, 1863 and was discharged July 11, 1865. He was a member of the Norwood Post 274 of the GAR.

Robert Nicholas Scarborough
Born June 3, 1842.  Died 1865-6 and is buried in the old Moore Cemetery.  He was in Co. A, Phelps Mo. Inf.

Samuel Washington Bolin Hines Scarborough
Born May 22, 1839 in NC.  Died Aug. 21, 1906 and is buried in Spillman Cemetery.  He was a Corp. in Company G, 16th Mo. Cav. 4/1864 to 7/1865.  He was commissioned as Capt. of Missouri Militia for Wright, Webster, Douglas, Texas, Ozark and Howell counties in 1865.  He lived in Hartville, MO. in 1890.

William Henry Schofield
Born May 5, 1844 in England.  Died April 19, 1919 and is buried in Swedish Cemetery.  He enlisted in Co. B, 31st Mo. Inf. Vols. and was wounded at Vicksburg, Miss.  His second enlistment was on Oct. 10, 1864 in Co. D, 31st Mo. Inf.  He was discharged on March 30, 1865.  He was a member of the Norwood Post 274 of the GAR.

Allen L. Scott
Born July 15, 1842 and is buried in the Hillcrest Cemetery.  He was a Pvt. in Co. F, 16th Mo. Cav., March 1, 1863 to June 30, 1865.

George Washington Scrivener
Born 1830.  Died April 3, 1864 and is buried in the Little Rock, AR National Cemetery.  He was a Pvt. in Co. I, 8th Mo. Cav.

George Washington Shackleford
Born Nov. 3, 1843 in Tenn.  He was a Pvt. in Co. A, 2nd Tenn. Inf. 10/8,1861 to 6/10/1864.  He lived in Hartville in 1890.

William D. Shaddy
Born March 25, 1845 in Tenn.  Died Sept. 19, 1919 and is buried in Shaddy Cemetery.  He was in Co. B, 46th Mo. Inf., Sept. 6, 1864 to March 6, 1865.

Erasmus M. E. B. Shaw
Born July 10, 1845.  Died Jan. 15, 1922.  He was in the 22nd Ind. Inf. and was Adj. of the Norwood Post 274 of the GAR.

Jonathan Shelby
Born Dec. 9, 1837 in Ill.  Died Nov. 19, 1904 and is buried in Dutch Chapel Cemetery.  He was a Pvt. in Co. H, 8th Mo. Cav. Aug. 14, 1863 to May 20, 1865.  He furnished his own horse.  His home was burned during the war.  As the bushwhackers were pilfering the cabin, one of them noticed his father-in-law's new boots and made him take them off, saying as he tied them on his saddle, "I have a boy these boots will fit."  After pilfering the cabin, preparation was made to set fire to it.  Following the destruction of their home, the family moved to Lebanon, Mo.  The told how the Union Army would pen up prisoners in log pens like hogs and would shovel in ears of corn for food as if they were hogs.  Jonathan served in many battles in Maissouri, particulary in the battle of Wilson's Creek and the battle of Neosho.  Jonathan was related to Confederate General Joe Shelby.

Born July 1841 in Penn.  Died 1932 and is buried in Newton Cemetery.  He was a Pvt. in Co. K, 84th Penn. Inf. 9/1861 to 6/7/1865.

John T. or P. Shropshire
Born 1848 in Tenn.  Died April 25, 1898 and is buried in Green Mountain Cemetery.  On Sept. 7, 1864 he was enrolled by Capt. W. Pryor as a Pvt. in Co. C, 6th Tenn. Mounted Inf. Vols.  On Dec. 1, 1864 at Camp Henson, Near Jasper, Tenn. he contracted measles which settled on his lungs, causing disability that would trouble him the remainder of his life.  At about the same time he received a severe cut on his right hip with an axe while cutting wood.  The camp apparently had no medical facilities as John was sent home to recover.  A squad in charge of his brother-in-law, William England, took him home where he remained until he was able to rejoin his company.  He was discharged with his company at Nashville, Tenn. on June 30, 1865.

Layfayett W. Simmons
Born March 15, 1832 in Ohio.  Died June 17, 1918 and is buried in Steele Cemetery.  Member of 13th Ind. Light Artillery; Pvt. 19th Ind. Cav. and a member of the GAR.  From obituary in the "Wright County Republican, June 20, 1918:  He recently contracted a severe cold, which developed into double pneumonia.  He was one of the older citizens of the county who have had a good influence upon its development.  He was a close student of current events and at all times aligned himself with the progressive civic measures.  He served throughout the Civil War and all of the Veterans here attended the funeral as honorary pall bearers.  He had been a member of the Chrisitan Church since early manhood.  He went with his parents to Indiana when a small child and when grown to middle-aged manhood, he moved to Wright County with his family in 1872.  His wife preceded him in death by about a year.  He was survived by his daughter Mrs. Joe Huffman and his 4 sons, J. H., C. H., B. W. and R. E. Simmons.

Henry C. Slate
Born March 1, 1835-37-40 in Tenn.  Died Jan. 8, 1917 and is buried in Slate Cemetery.  He was Pvt. in Co. C, 8th Mo. Cav 17/1/1862 to 2/8/1865.  He was a member of the Chester A. Arthur Post 299 GAR and lived in Mansfield, Mo. in 1890.

Thomas Sluder
Pvt., Co. E, 6th Mo. Inf., 4/1864 to 10/3/1864.  His foot was smashed and right arm was crippled during the war.

David Miller Smith
Born Oct. 20, 1834 in Tenn.-Ga.  Died Sept. 3, 1915 and is buried in Little Creek Cemetery.  He was a Cpl. in Co. G, 120th Ill. Inf. 22/8/1862 to 10/9/1865.  He lived in Boyer, Mo. in 1890.

Henry Smith
Born Dec. 23, 1824 in NC.  Died Sept. 17, 1881 and is buried in Hensley Cemetery.  He was a Pvt. in Co. B, 1st Mo. Cav., 1/8/1862 to 13/1/1865.

Henry J. Smith
Born June 30, 1839 in Ind.  Died July 28-9, 1907 and is buried in Broyles Cemetery.  He was in the 54th Ind. Inf.

Isirel G. Smith
Pvt., Co. A, 4th Tenn. Inf., 12/1862 to 1/8/1865.  He was a member of the Chester A. Arthur Post 299 of the GAR.

Born Jan. 1, 1822 in Ind.-Ohio.  Died Oct. 25, 1912 and is buried in Little Smittle Cemetery.  Pvt., Co. B, 46th Mo. Inf., 9/1864 to 3/1865.

David Joseph Smittle
Born July 14, 1837 in Ohio.  Died Feb. 18, 1917 and is buried in Bramhall Cemetery.  He served in the 6th Prov. Reg. of Enrolled Mo. Militia from April l, 1863 to Aug. 7, 1864.  He was aPvt. in Co. F, 16th Mo. Cav. Feb. 24, 1864 to June 24, 1865.

Pvt. Co. F, 16th Mo. Cav., 9/1864 to 20/6/1865.  He is listed in the 1860 census for Wright Co. as born in Ind. and age 40.

John Henry Snow
Born Feb. 5, 1819 in Tenn.  Died March 5, 1887 and is buried in McBride Cemetery in Laclede County, Mo.  He was a Pvt. in Co. G, 6th Prov. Reg. Enrolled Mo. Militia June 1, 1863 at Lebanon, Mo. and remaind in service until Sept. 10, 1863.

James Sparks
Born in Tenn.  Died March 10, 1903 and is buried in Mt. Zion (Clark's Creek) Cemetery.  He was a veteran of the Black Hawk and Mexican wars and a justice of the peace for 40 years in Hart Township.  During the Civil War he was in the 24th Mo. Inf.  He was a member of Norwood Post 274 GAR.  He lived in Hartville, Mo. in 1898.

James Richard Sparks
Born July 24, 1841 in Tenn.  He is buried in Curtis Cemetery.  He was a Cpl. in the 24th Reg. Mo. Inf.

Elias Tilford Spurgeon
Born Oct. 20, 1839 in Ind.  Died August 3, 1906 and is buried in Friendship Cemetery.  He was in the 48th Mo. Inf.

Erben Cassador Steele
Born May 1847 in Perry County, Ill.  Died 1901.  He served as commander of the Norwood Post 274 GAR.  The Joe K. Mower Post GAR furnished a mounted escort from the home to the grave.  He is buried in Steele Cemetery, Hartville Mo.  He was educated at Carbondale College and served as a Pvt. in the 136th Ill. Inf. where he suffered a leg wound in a skirmish.  He had piercing grey eyes, a reddish beard and limed from his war wound the remainder of his life.  He was the founder of the Wright County Bank.  According to newspaper accounts, he was first buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.  The following year he was moved to the center of that cemetery and several years later to the Steele Cemetery in Hartville.

James Henderson Steele
Born Feb. 10, 1849.  Died Feb. 5, 1940 and buried in the Steele Cemetery.  Served in Co. D, 136th Ill. Vol. Inf.  Born in Pinckneyville, IL and died in Ryan Hospital, Mountain Grove, following an attack of pneumonia.  He spent many years in the West engaged as a rancher.  He was a brother of E. C. Steele and after his brother's death, came to Wright County to oversee the Steele ranches here.  He never married.

Charles A. Delbert Steinert
Born 1840 in N. J.  Died 1905 and is buried in Thomas Cemetery.  Bugler in Co. A, 6th Mo. Cav., enlisted at Pilor Knob, Mo. and was transferred to Greene Co. Mo.  He was wounded by a musket ball in his lungs.  He was a member of the Norwood Post 274 of the GAR.

Died Feb. 22, 1896 and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery.  He was a Sgt. in Co. F, 53rd Ind. Inf. 1/11862 to 7/4/1862

Andrew J. Stout
Born Oct. 15, 1839.  Died Jan 4, 1919 and is buried in Mansfield Cemetery.  He was a Pvt. in Co. C, 3rd Mo. Cav. July 25, 1862 to Nov. 14, 1865.  He was a member of the GAR.

John O. Stout
Born June 4, 1838.  Died Nov. 10, 1906 and is buried in Hensley Cemetery.  He was in Co. K, 4th Prov. Enrolled Mo. Militia.

George A. Stowell
Co. A, 3rd Wisc. Reorganized Cav.  He is buried in Lone Star Cemetery.

John Strong
Born in Tenn. and age 28 according to the 1860 census for Wright Co., Mo.  He was in the 73rd Enrolled Mo. Militia.

Isaac Strong
Born 1841 in Tenn.  Died 1906 and is buried in Lofton Cemetery in Douglas Co. Mo.  He was born in Tenn. and age 30 according to the 1860 census for Wright Co., Mo.  He was a Pvt. in Mo.

McCarer E. Sullins
Born 1846.  Died March 27, 1896 and is buried in Hopkins Cemetery.  He enlisted in Co. I, 6th Mo. Cav. Vols. at Rolla, MO. in Feb. 1862.

David M. Sullivan
Born May 7, 1833 in NY.  died Jan. 11, 1897 and is buried in Mansfield Cemetery.  He was Pvt. in Co. A, 14th Wisc. Inf.  He was discharged Jan. 1865.

M. W. Sullivan
He was a member of the J. W. Mower Post 436 of the GAR.
