to Mo. He was sheriff of Wright Co. 1863 to 1865 and Associate judge, Wright

E., James E., Viola, Thomas S. and Essie. In 1886 he married Mary
A. Stigall and they had 4 children: Walter C., Eula, Ruth and Ray.

Cemetery. He was a Pvt. in Co. H, 8th Mo. Cav. Aug. 14, 1863 to May
20, 1865. He furnished his own horse. His home was burned during
the war. As the bushwhackers were pilfering the cabin, one of them
noticed his father-in-law's new boots and made him take them off, saying
as he tied them on his saddle, "I have a boy these boots will fit."
After pilfering the cabin, preparation was made to set fire to it.
Following the destruction of their home, the family moved to Lebanon, Mo.
The told how the Union Army would pen up prisoners in log pens like hogs
and would shovel in ears of corn for food as if they were hogs. Jonathan
served in many battles in Maissouri, particulary in the battle of Wilson's
Creek and the battle of Neosho. Jonathan was related to Confederate
General Joe Shelby.

Cemetery. On Sept. 7, 1864 he was enrolled by Capt. W. Pryor as a
Pvt. in Co. C, 6th Tenn. Mounted Inf. Vols. On Dec. 1, 1864 at Camp
Henson, Near Jasper, Tenn. he contracted measles which settled on his lungs,
causing disability that would trouble him the remainder of his life.
At about the same time he received a severe cut on his right hip with an
axe while cutting wood. The camp apparently had no medical facilities
as John was sent home to recover. A squad in charge of his brother-in-law,
William England, took him home where he remained until he was able to rejoin
his company. He was discharged with his company at Nashville, Tenn.
on June 30, 1865.

in the "Wright County Republican, June 20, 1918: He recently contracted
a severe cold, which developed into double pneumonia. He was one
of the older citizens of the county who have had a good influence upon
its development. He was a close student of current events and at
all times aligned himself with the progressive civic measures. He
served throughout the Civil War and all of the Veterans here attended the
funeral as honorary pall bearers. He had been a member of the Chrisitan
Church since early manhood. He went with his parents to Indiana when
a small child and when grown to middle-aged manhood, he moved to Wright
County with his family in 1872. His wife preceded him in death by
about a year. He was survived by his daughter Mrs. Joe Huffman and
his 4 sons, J. H., C. H., B. W. and R. E. Simmons.

of the Norwood Post 274 GAR. The Joe K. Mower Post GAR furnished
a mounted escort from the home to the grave. He is buried in Steele
Cemetery, Hartville Mo. He was educated at Carbondale College and
served as a Pvt. in the 136th Ill. Inf. where he suffered a leg wound in
a skirmish. He had piercing grey eyes, a reddish beard and limed
from his war wound the remainder of his life. He was the founder
of the Wright County Bank. According
to newspaper accounts, he was first buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
The following year he was moved to the center of that cemetery and several
years later to the Steele Cemetery in Hartville.
