Railroads

Railroad Talk,  (May - June 1902)

The air is rife with railroad news just now and east and north Miss. is the theater of many projected enterprises.  The Frisco and Southern are afraid of each other and appear to be bluffing heavy.

Every 24 hours brings some new announcement in the dailies of roads to be built etc.  perhaps these bluffs may result in action from one of these companies and redound to the interest of some portion of Calhoun, yet there is little certainty about where the Mobile, Jackson & Kansas City will run if built to a junction with the Memphis & Birmingham.

It is now reported that the I. C. has abandoned the Memphis and Mobile scheme, concerning which so much was said last week in the papers.  So it is impossible for a little weekly local to keep pace and to chronicle the many reports and wild rumors afloat.

It is said that the Nashville & Mississippi Delta will be built soon from Helena, Ark., via Grenada, Houston and Okolona to the coal fields east.  Well, we will watch and re-echo a few things said of these projected lines but not all.

Contract Awarded  (May - June 1902)

Memphis, Tenn., May, 22 –
President Frank Merrill, of the Mobile, Jackson and Kansas City, has closed a contract for the construction of an additional 100 miles of road from Hattiesburg to Decatur Miss.

The work will go forward at once.  The road is headed in a straight line for Memphis, to connect this city with deep water at Mobile.  – N. O. Picayune.

*****
So two contracts for one hundred miles each, at either end of the above road is said to have been let and work is progressing.  If this road is built on an air line as one the above contractors says it will be, it will pass through the western portion of Calhoun county, but the chances are that if built it will pass through the center of the county.
