Kite Cemetery, Choctaw Co, MS

The information and photos on Kite Cemetery was generously submitted for inclusion on the Choctaw Co MS web site. The submitter is presently working on a project in the county and he came across the cemetery through his job.
        Kite Cemetery is located
about a half-mile east of the Weir - Stewart Road. It's at the end of an old woods road. The cemetery is just north of the TVA's 500 kVA transmission line. It's part of a piece of property now owned by Kevin and Keith Box and is right at the top of the SW quarter of the section. Much, if not most of the timber around the cemetery was recently harvested all around the cemetery, but not in the cemetery itself. Very few of the people in Choctaw County that we are working with me on the project knew much about the Kite Cemetery. One of the long-time local residents told me that it contained about 10 - 15 graves. When we got to it, we found more like 75 - 100 graves. Both blacks and whites are buried in the cemetery. There are 3 apparent graves that are more like crypts - built above ground with stones. None of those graves are marked. Many of the blacks buried there appear to have come from affluent families. There are many photos of the blacks on tombstones in remarkably good shape in the cemetery.
