"Clarke County was formed in 1833, sixteen years after Mississippi became a state. Previous to the coming of the white man the county was inhabited by the southern division of the Choctaw Indians, called okla hannali, "six people" or "six towns" -- and twenty-eight place-names of the county pay tribute to these "six towns" Indians, who for their differences in speech were held in contempt by other Choctaws.
Present Clarke County was inhabited by Indians longer than other parts of South Mississippi. When in 1805 Hiowanee, Chief of the Shubuta, met the surveying party of the government in the forest just east of his camp with the laconic words "Go South", south the surveyors went, using for once common sense instead of government red caps, saving their scalps by blocking out the Hiowanee Reserve, and leaving Smoky Water settlement still in the possession of the Indians. The first white settlers came from the Carolinas and Georgia and settled in the eastern part of the county. About 1834 a few white settlers began to make small settlements on the sandy terraces of the Chickasawhay River and near the larger streams, often almost on the banks. From a historical point of view, Clarke County has done its part for the state. John J. McRae, an early governor, lived for a time in the city of Enterprise, which he had named. During the Civil War, this city served as capital of the state for three weeks."
