Roxie Today
Roxie is located in Southwest Mississippi in Franklin County, home of the Homochitto National Forest and the New Lake Okhissa being built by the National Parks Service. With a population in Roxie of around 550 and a county wide population of only 8700, this area is a great place to live and raise your family! We have several churches here in town and one of the best school systems in the state is located right here in Franklin County!
Our Roxie Volunteer Fire Department received a new pumper two years ago and purchased new turn-out gear for our Firefighters. Six members of the fire department are now trained as First Responders and are able to take care of almost any emergency until medical help arrives. As a public service, the fire department recently place smoke detectors in many of the homes in Roxie free of charge. We are currently working on lowering our fire insurance rating.
With the help of several Federal Grants, we recently upgraded our water and sewer system. Roxie now has some of the best tasting water around. Our drainage system has been recently upgraded and we are in the process now of applying for a Housing Grant to repair or replace some of the homes of our citizens.
We get a large number of tourists in our area who come for the great camping at Clear Springs Lake, a part of the National Park Service; for the excellent hunting in our Caston Creek Wildlife Management Area, and the good fishing in the area.
We expect a great many more tourists and newcomers in the next couple of years when Lake Okhissa is completed and opened to the public and the many facilities connected with it begin operation. Lake Okhissa was recently closed and the filling of the lake has begun. Contracts are being let now for the construction of the many projects related to the Lake such as camps, lodges, boat ramps, sewer construction, roads, etc.
We are actively recruiting new businesses to locate in Roxie and are looking for a big frog for our little pond to bring some jobs into our area.
