African-American Deaths in Lexington,
Holmes County, MS and Surrounding Areas
Transcribed From the Personal Notebook of the Late
Mrs.
Annie Z. Harrington Burch (12/11/1897 - 3/16/1984)
Annie Z. Harrington Burch (bn.
12/11/1897; died 3/16/1984), of Lexington, Holmes County, Mississippi,
meticulously documented the deaths (and some births) of over 300
African Americans who lived and died primarily in Holmes County.
Some of those listed may have been friends and family members in nearby
Leflore and Carroll counties, among others. Annie Burch was
active in Holly Grove Missionary Baptist Church, in Lexington. I
don't know why she kept the notebook listing deaths and burials of
local residents; perhaps it was related to her church responsibilities.
Bear in mind that Annie Burch probably was not correct in spelling many
of the names. However, most are close enough to be of immense help to
anyone searching for African American ancestors. Her accuracy on the
dates, a few births, burials, and notes on how people died, are to be
commended.
The document’s columns list the last name, first name, date of death,
birth date, Annie's notes, and Delores' notes. My notes indicate likely
spelling errors/variations and possible transcription errors.
I am researching the African American Banks, Tolbert, Riley and Walls
families primarily of Holmes County, but also Carroll, Leflore and
surrounding counties. I welcome sharing of information on these
families, would consider it a blessing to hear from anyone who finds
their relatives or family friends on this list.
