History of Belzoni and Humphreys County

Humphreys County was named for B. G. Humphreys. Benjamin Grubb Humphreys  (1808-1882),
a native of Claiborne County, was educated in New Jersey and entered
West Point in the  same class Robert E. Lee in 1825,
but he was dismissed from the academy for participating in a Christmas frolic that turned into a riot.
He returned to Mississippi, represented Claiborne County in the State Legislature from 1839 to 1844,
and moved to Sunflower County, where
he became a successful planter, in 1846.
Commissioned a captain in the Confederate army in 1861, he
was promoted to brigadier general
after the battle of Gettysburg in 1863. On October 2, 1865, he
was elected Governor of Mississippi
under President Johnson's Reconstruction policy, and he was re-elected in 1868;
but, with the institution of Congressional Reconstruction, he was removed from office
by federal troops on June 15, 1868.
He was engaged in the insurance business in Jackson until 1877,
when he retired to his plantation in Sunflower County, where he died in December of 1882.
Benjamin G. Humphreys was the grandson of Major David Smith, for whom Smith County was named.

Created by the Fourth Constitution (1890), May 31, 1918 from
Holmes, Washington, Yazoo and Sunflower Counties.

Available Resources and Lookup Volunteers
USGenWeb County Help Copyright Page -

USGenWeb'S Official Policy

USGenWeb will not tolerate any copyright violations. Lookup requests should be limited to one name, or perhaps two if it is a married couple. Information given will be minimal, for example if it is a cemetery lookup, the information will be the name of the cemetery and the dates on the headstone. Please do not ask for "everybody with X surname" or an entire family group, or for hardcopies to be mailed; the volunteers have been asked not to comply with such requests.
Our lookups will extend to searching the book to determine if the book would be helpful to you in your research. Should the book prove useful, we can provide the authors address and ordering information.
The USGenWeb Project will endeavor to get a WRITTEN statement from each copyright holder which stipulates which books may be used for lookups.

Humphreys County Lookup Volunteers
Feel free to request a look-up from the following resources, using these guidelines.

  1. Limit your request to one name per message.
  2. Send your request to the volunteer's e-mail address that is listed.
  3. Put HUMPHREYS COUNTY LOOKUP in the subject line of your request to insure the message is not overlooked.
  4. In the first line of the message, put the name of the book from which you are requesting the lookup.

  5. Don't forget to thank your volunteer for his or her time.

History of the USGenWeb Project

In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the

Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide
a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored.
In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual
were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.
At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to
coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page.
That is how this project was started, and it is an invaluable resource to researchers.
If you would like to participate by adopting a county,
volunteering for one of the special projects,
or adding your information with other researchers,
please contact either
State Coordinator  Jeff Kemp  <kemp@netnitco.net>
Assistanct State Coordinators
Jackie Rhodes <kjrhodes@tycom.net>
or Denise Wells <msgenasc@gmail.com>
