A poll tax was a capital tax levied on every adult in the community.
Many of the poll taxes were enacted between 1880 and 1910 and had
the effect of disenfranchising many, because payment of the tax was a prerequisite
for voting. The Road Tax was used for the upkeep of local roads and
bridges and was usually levied on every adult citizen.Below are examples
of 1929 Issaquena County Poll and Road Tax Receipts.
