Richard H. Truly
The Fayette Chronicle
October 7, 1904
Obituary submitted by Jeanne Truly Davis, January, 2002.Mr. Richard H. Truly died at his home here last Saturday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock, after an illness covering a period of nearly two years, the beginning of which was a slight stroke of paralysis. After the death of his wife in March, 1903, Mr. Truly's health gradually but constantly declined, and the end was not unexpected, and his family, with the exception of Mr. N.V. Truly of Eagle Lake, Texas, were at the bedside when the final summons came.
Mr. Truly was born near Old Greenville (then the county site) December 5, 1833, and attended and was graduated by Oakland College, after which he was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Fayette for a short while until the breaking out of the Civil War, when he volunteered as a soldier of the Confederacy and served as Lieutenant in Capt. A.J. Cameron's artillery company. After the war he returned to Fayette and engaged in the mercantile business until his removal to New Orleans in 1869, from which place he went to Natchez and was in business in that city until 1875, when he again returned to Fayette and took an active part in the reconstruction work done here in 1875-'76, since which time he has made his home here.
The funeral was conducted from his late residence Sunday morning at nine o'clock, Rev. E. M. Stewart, conducting the ceremony. His sons, Mr. R.H. Truly, Jr., Judge Jeff Truly, Dr. B.A. Truly, and Mr. N.V. Truly and his daughter, Mrs. Jos. W. Power, of Jackson, survive him. They have the sympathy of numerous friends in their loss.
