February Term 1872

Simpkin Smith, Moderator. Elizah Latham requested the Church to exclude him from her body, stating that he had joined through delusion and after thorough investigation of the matter found that he had been engaged in unchristian conduct. His request granted. Brother Samuel Hayman had also gone astray. He being at a distance, the clerk was requested to write and cite him to our new conference.

 

March 1873

The case of Sam Hayman was taken up and after thorough investigation of the matter, a motion and second, he was excluded from the body for drunkenness and other unchristian conduct. J.E. Brunson, Moderator.

Divine services led by Brother J.E. Brunson. IT was reported that Jerry (Jere) Hayman had been guilty of drinking too much intoxicating liquors, Brother Hayman, being present requested the Church to exclude him, stating he was unwilling to promise to refrain from the evils of drink as he did not think that he could keep his promise; so, on motion and second, the Church excluded him from her body for drunkenness.

G.G. Bunyard returned a letter of dismission for himself and wife Eliza. Sister Avaline Carr presented herself for admission with a letter from Buckatunna Church; she was received. Services for membership by letter from Mt. Zion Church was received. Services at night led by Brother F.A. Freeman. J. F. Irby and Tabitha Richey united themselves with the Church by experience. Services led by Elder A. Yarbrough on Tuesday.

February 1874

Brother J. F. Bunyard, who joined the Church in January, presented a letter from New Hope Church, No. 2 Arkansas County, Arkansas. Brother Simpkin Smith made acknowledgement for J.F. Irby by his request for drunkenness which gave satisfaction. It was reported that Brother Levi Heart had been engaged in dancing and using profane language - it was stated that Bro. Heart had sent the Church word that there was no need for a committee as he would not make any acknowledgement; Church excluded him. J. W. Molpus reported to have used profane language. Bro. Molpus, who was present, f ailed to give satisfaction. Committee of S.D. Ellis, J.S. Ellis, and J.D. Stone appointed to work with him. Bro. John A. Smith reported to have been dancing. Committee of John Hughes, Sr., W.A. Ansley, and G.W. Rainer appointed to labor with Bro. Smith. E. Smith, Moderator.

 

March 1874

John C. Culpepper returned letters for himself and his wife (not named). The Bro. Molpus matter lay over until next meeting. Bro. J.A. Smith was excluded upon request.

 

April 1874

Bro. J. W. Molpus made satisfactory acknowledgement and upon satisfactory explanation by Bro. Irby he was forgiven by the Church.

 

June 1874

Sister M.S. Vinson and E.J. Smith granted letters of dismission.

 

July 1874

It was reported that F.W. Irby had purchased the parcel of land on which the Church was situated. Bros. J.R. Bunyard, E. Smith and G.W. Rainer to see the brother and make arrangements to obtain a letter to five acres donated by the agent for the sale of said land.

 

August 1874

J. D. Stone, Moderator. Church grieved with Bro. F.W. Irby and Bro. S.D. Ellis for trampling upon her right in purchasing the land, whereupon a charge was preferred against them. Committee of John Hughes, John Smith and J.R. Bunyard appointed to labor with the charged parties. J.R. Bunyard, J.D. Stone, and J.M. Hughes appointed delegates to Association.

 

September 1874

John Irby granted letter of dismission.

 

October 1874

The cases of S.D. Ellis and F.W. Irby taken up. S.D. Ellis made satisfactory acknowledgement. Brother J.W. Hays excluded upon request for drinking. The Church granted Bro. G.W. Rainer and Bro. J.D. Stone authority to exercise the gift (preach) any way that they see proper. J.D. Stone to preach at Bethany Baptist Church. The case of F.W. Irby referred to committee from five different churches (Union, New Hope, Mt. Horeb, Buckatunna, and Bethany).

 

November 1874

The church paid ten dollars for land which was recommended by the committee. It was reported that J.W. White had attached himself to the Methodist Episcopal Society. Bro. E. Smith and S.D. Ellis to labor with him. J.D. Stone, Moderator. Bro. H. (Harvey) Yarbrough conducted services. Catherine Blackwell joined by experience. Miss L.A. Culpepper also joined by experience.

 

December 1874

Brother Josiah Ethridge and Miles Stone presented themselves from Mt. Horeb and were received. (Note: It is thought that Mt. Horeb located in Zero…There were two Mt. Horebs, one for a while at old Whynot; and the other in Zero) Bro. John White excommunicated for joining the Methodist Society. Brothers E. Smith, John Hughes Sr., and John Hughes Jr. volunteered to visit Mt. Horeb Church.

 

January 1875

Brother Jackson Butler sent in acknowledgement of drinking; this deferred until next meeting. It was reported that Bro. E. Clark had been overtaken in the same fault. Bro. Clark made frank acknowledgement which was received. Bro. Silas Clark was excluded upon request. Bro. M.G. McDonald sent a letter embracing a frank acknowledgement for the error of his course and requested to be restored to the Church; request granted. Bros. E. Smith, J. R. Bunyard and S.D. Ellis appointed to collect funds for the purpose of paying Bro. F.W. Irby for the lot of land on which the Church stands and obtain deed.

 

February 1875

Case of Jackson Butler taken up. The Church voted to suspend rule requiring each member attend their acknowledgement, then took up Bro. Butler’s acknowledgement, which was accepted. Sister M.E. Ellis granted letter of dismission.

 

March 1875

April 1875

It was reported that Sister Martha Martin, Sister Elizabeth Anderson and Sister Tabitha Richey (all of them) had been dancing. Committees appointed to labor with the sisters and report back to the Church. Bro. C.A. Gressett selected as supply for the balance of the Association year.

 

May 1875

Sister Martha Martin acquitted for dancing, as was Elizabeth Anderson. Sister Tabitha Richey being obstinate and failing to give the Church satisfaction was excluded from the Church body.

 

 

June 1875

Bro. C.A. Gressett, Moderator. Bro. B.J. Hays was reported to have been dancing; the committee reported that they found him obstinate and persistent in his sinful course, he was excluded.

 

July 1875

It was reported that Bro. Samuel Anderson and John Smith were involved in a personal difficulty and living at variance and unbecoming to Christian brethren; committee of John Hughes Sr., R.F. Butler, J.W. Ellis and J.D. Stone appointed to labor with Bros. Anderson and Smith.

 

August 1875

Committee made report on the Anderson/Smith matter, which was accepted. Then Church appointed an arbitrating committee of T.G. Rainer, J.W. Ellis and George Bunyard to settle the dispute. W.J. Ellis, Church Clerk. Sister Hart granted letter of dismission.

 

September 1875

Received by letter Francis Richey; by restoration, Silas M. Irby, by experience, Charley Belio, Henrietta Smith, Lucie Hughes, Margaret Tedder, Roseana Tedder. The Arbitrating committee found John Smith in error; the Church voted to exclude him from the body. Bro. B. F. Johnson had been found guilty of conduct unbecoming a Christian. The case was placed under consideration and found that he was impenitent in his wicked and disorderly walk; the Church agreed to exclude him.

 

October 1875

A minority report was given in the matter of exclusion of Bro. John Smith. The matter was deferred until the next meeting.

 

November 1875

The matter of John Smith laid over until the next meeting.

 

December 1875

The case of John Smith taken up and after considerable consultation and debate, the matter was finally dismissed.

 

January 1876

Mt. Horeb Church requested ordination of J.D. Stone. A council appointed to handle same. This was Elder J.E. Brunson, A. Gressett and Elder Camp. (Note: Apparently these persons were not members of the Church at the time as certain members were appointed to contact them.)

 

February 1876

It was reported that Brethen Charley Belio and J.J. Johnson had been engaged in dancing; both excluded. Then it was reported that Sister Lizzie Richey and Henrietta Smith had been engaged in dancing, for which both was excluded. Bro. J.D. Stone was ordained.

 

March 1876

It was reported that Bro. Frank Richey and Sister Lucy Hughes had violated the rules of the Church by engaging in dancing. Committee was appointed to wait upon them and report the results of their labor.

 

April 1876

May 1876

Bro. Frank Richey sent in acknowledgement; Church rejected same because he was not present. The committee had failed to see Sister Lucy Hughes; another committee appointed to see her. The matter of the John Smith/Samuel Anderson matter arose once again. It was decided to get a committee from Sister Churches - Mt. Horeb, Buckatunna, and Bethany - to settle the matter. Bro. J.D. Stone to see Mt. Horeb; Bro. G.W. Rainer to see Bethany; and Bro. W.J. Hughes to see Buckatunna. Sister H. Smith and Mildred Godwin granted letters of dismission. Bro. H. Yarbrough chosen as supply (moderator). W.J. Hughes appointed to inform him.

 

June 1876

James Anderson arose and made acknowledgement for the error of his course. The Church accepted same. Bro. Frank Richey’s acknowledgement was accepted and he was acquitted. It was reported that Sister Lucy had been found to be obstinate and persistent in her wicked course. The Church excluded her for the offense of dancing. Report on Anderson/Smith dispute: Your committee begs leave to report as follows: We believe that Bro. John Smith to be in error and also believe Bro. Samuel Anderson to be in error for buying land that he, Samuel Anderson, knew that John Smith had previously contracted for. Report goes on to say that the matter is of great importance, thus possibly too important for three Church members to handle. Case deferred until next meeting. James Anderson granted letter of dismission for himself and wife.

 

July 1876

The land dispute continues with the Church trying to work things out. Finally, John Smith said that as far as the land, S.J. Anderson could take it; but as far as extending his hand in token of friendship, he would not do it. James L. Irby excluded for being intoxicated. W. J. Ellis, Church Clerk.

 

August 1876

J. H. Hughes, Church Clerk. Anderson/Smith case continued. (Note: The writing here very hard to read) Bro. G.W. Rainer ordained.

Bro. J. P. Anderson excluded for intoxication; a committee assigned to obtain his letter.

 

October 1876

Sister H.R. Vinson granted letter of dismission. The case of S.J. Anderson and John Smith was settled to the Church’s satisfaction; both returned to the fellowship of the Church. S.J. Lafferty, S.E. Butler, W.P. Irby, L.?, Smith, Cobb Smith and H.?E. Smith were received by experience. Sister Ella Smith, Mary, Martha, and Rachel Anderson received by letter. B.J. Hays was restored.

Divine services by Bro. J.E. Brunson. Bro. J.L. Buckalew and Sister G.A. Buckalew presented letters of dismission from Oak Grove Church, Lauderdale County, MS., and were received into membership. The Thirteenth Article changed: That each male member shall pay 50 cents into the treasury of the Church at the November conference each year. J.M. Hughes, Church Clerk.

(Note: IT is known that some of the records of this Church are missing and presumed to have been destroyed for reasons known only to the party or parties who destroyed these records. It is thought a portion of those records may have been re-constructed, but there is no proof.)
