All is hustle and hurry now at Hillman College, old Hillman down at
Clinton, Miss. The graduating season is almost here! For many, many years
Hillman has gone on turning out graduates. It is no new thing for
Hillman, but this year it is a momentous event in the life of the
president of the student body and the senior class.
The president, by the way, of these two organizations --- quite a
deserving compliment in itself --- is Pearl May Miller.
Thousands of readers of The Commercial Appeal remember Miss Pearl May
Miller. It is through their kindness that Pearl May is going to graduate
from Hillman as president of the student body and the senior class.
Pearl May, it will he remembered, was the sole survivor of a tragedy in

members of her family, including her father and sister were murdered and
their home was burnt. Pearl May survived by hiding in the loft of the
Friends and readers of The Commercial Appeal began to send in
contributions to educate Pearl May. The response was tremendous. A total
of $9,200 was raised. This was invested in Liberty bonds, then selling
below par, and Pearl May entered Blue Mountain with a fund of $10,000 at
her command. "Mother" Berry took charge of her. Pearl May, then about 13,
had never had much schooling. But she was bright and pretty soon she was
ready for high school. She went through high school with honors.
About this time one of her teachers left for Hillman College. Pearl May
asked to go along, and the trustees of the fund, who are also guardians,
Her school life at Hillman has been pleasant and profitable. She has
rounded out her education in the arts and is an accomplished musician.
She is active in the Y. W. C. A. and in the B. Y. P. U. And besides, she
is president of the student body and of the senior class."

I am in the process of tracing my wife's family name on her mother's side.
We don't have any older living relatives and only have info that was passed word
of mouth and some pictures. Hopefully we will have a web site, which will
include pictures, completed in the near future. The name we are tracking
is James Abraham Tubb b: March 17, 1875. He was married to Sally L.
Garrison. They lived in Walker County, AL with 4 daughters. Daughters
were born between 1900 and 1915. His father was John Summers Tubb. James
was a coal mine superintendent. Just as the depression started the mines
were closed and he left Walker County to return to his home town of
Amory,MS to find work. He then went to Louisville, MS to work, which is
where he died and is supposedly buried. He died within 2 years(we do not
have a date of death), and never returned to Alabama where his family had
remained. My wife visited Amory in 1957 and we have a picture of the
family house, which she says was in very bad shape even then. No one
lived in it. His sister had supposedly lived next door but we do not have
a name. I have a copy of the book "The Tubb Family of Monroe Mississippi
and Their Kin", which has been a great help. Any and all help or
suggestions will be appreciated. John Newman
