OSWELL
- My great- grandfather, Nicholas Oswell, is listed in the 1880 Federal census
as living in Monroe County, but I have no other information. I am particularly
interested in information about his death (about 1880-1900), but understand there
are no death certificates earlier than 1912 in the state records. Any information,
such as cemetary records, would be appreciated.

MAJORS, SULLIVAN
- Seek to share info about the MAJOR or MAJORS or MAGERS families of Monroe Co., MS.
They arrived there about 1835-40. Trying to validate whether Mary Polly Majors was the
mother of Osborn Majors (Ausburn Majors). Believe him to be the youngest child of Mary
Polly Majors and Samuel Majors, formerly of Blount Co., TN. Samuel died about 1801 and
his estate settled and last child was grown by about 1820, and the family moved to Alabama
then Misissippi. Daughter Malinda Majors married Elijah Sullivan in Tennessee, and took
her mother and youngest siblings with her when the Sullivans moved west. Please contact

THOMPSON
- I am looking for anything on Julia Caroline THOMPSON, b. in SC, m. Isreal Pickens JOHNSTON.
Believe they came to Smithville, Monroe Co., MS bet. 1840-1849. She had a brother, William
THOMPSON and a sister, Elvira THOMPSON MCCORMICK who also came with her. Her mother settled
on the old "CALDWELL" place, one of them settled on the old "ALLEN" place and one on the old
"OlIPHANT" place. The mother is buried, so the story goes, on the old "CALDWELL" place.

- Searching for descendants of James GARDNER of Cabarrus Co. NC, whose family came to
Lowndes/Monroe Co. MS during the 1830's/1840's. Son John Franklin GARDNER stayed in MS.
Searching for birthplace of Othniel GARDNER born in 1843 MS to James Marion GARDNER and
Elizabeth Jane SKEIN. This GARDNER family was in Henderson Co. TX by 1848. I have about
700 descendants of James GARDNER and his wife Mary (---).

DOWNS/DAVIS
- Looking for information on the Downs/Davis families. Dioclesian L. Downs born
Monroe Cty, MS about 1839. He had a half brother - James E.M. Davis. Both were in
the civil war on opposite sides. Davis later married Downs wife. Downs married
Elizabeth Armina Crow and in 1870 census was living in Grant Cty, AR. Davis married
Elizabeth and lived in Red River County, TX. Looking for information on both these
men and their families

on a Dioclesian L. Downs. Born abt. 1837, Monroe Cty, MS. Married to Elizabeth
Armina Crow and in 1870 lived in Grant Cty, AR. He had a half brother J.E.M.(Jim)
Davis, also married to Elizabeth. Downs also served as a Capt. in the civil war,

MARKHAM
- My husband's family is the Markham's of Gattman, Miss. I'm trying to find any
info on R.L. Markham B 11-11-1879, he married Dessi Glo Pope from Sulligent, Ala.
I know he had a store and land in Gattman but I cannot find anything on the family.
I'm especially looking for R.L.Markham's parents. Any help would be appreciated.

PETERSON
- My great-grandfather, Nelson PETERSON, his wife, Sophia and their children George,
Phillip and Venda/veneva were in MS in 1870. I found them on the 1870
census record. They were in Aberdeen, Monroe County, MS. I know that they stayed
in MS at least through 1875 as their youngest child, Minnie, was born in MS in 1875.
I don't know when they left MS but I found Sophia and the children in the 1880 IL
census but Nelson wasn't listed so I am thinking that they were either divorced or he
died in MS and she returned to Rock Island, IL where her relatives lived. What was
happening in Monroe County MS in the period that would have encourged them to go there
and would the county clerk have any information about his death or divorce if it
occurred in MS between 1875 and 1880? Would there be a record of Minnie's birth in the
county for the year 1875?

- On August 25, 1999, I placed a query on the board. Little wonder that I did not get
any feedback for I was asking the wrong question. That post read: Seeking information
about WHITE family buried in Greenbrier Cemetery near Becker MS. Jim Leonard White b. 1903
d. 1976; Sally White b. 1906 d. 1976; Hattie Bell White b. 1905 d. 1935. Their parents are
Pleas David (son of Pleasant and Nancy Catherine White of Lamar Co. AL) and Pink Nichols White
(daughter of Green Jackson and Ruth Duncan Nichols) are also buried there. Everything was
correct except for the mother's name. The mother's name was Azore Della Bridges White
daughter of Joseph J. and Rachel White Bridges. Pink Nichols was the wife of Pleas David's
brother Alfred Winchester White. I do apologize for any confusion that this has caused.

- Hello My most elusive ancestors are CORNELUIS GHOLSTON(GHOLSON,GOHLSON) his
parents were James and eliza Gholston. he was born around 1850 in MONROE County,
MS, However his parents were from VA. I have research him from 1870-1910 and
then I lose him. the only other document that place in MONROE COUNTY is some
deeds from 1915-1916. He was married twice first wife was ALCY,AISLEY WHITFIELd
and his second wife name was FANNIE whitfield. alcy parents were ESSEX and
MARY whitfield and they were from NC. I found them on the 1870 census in
MONROE County also, but I lose her parents after that. alcy was also born around
1850. Corneluis had 1 sister and 2 brothers also. and alcey had 1 sister and 2
brothers as well. Cornelius's names are CAROLINE, RICHARD, and JOHN. who I have
yet to find any information on. ALCY siblings were JAMES,LEWIS,AND CAROLINE. I
also do not have any information on them either.

SMITH
- My great uncle is Omer Coy Smith born 1917 in Amory, Mississippi in Monroe co Ms.
When he tried to get a copy of his birth certificate at the courthouse in
Aberdeen his original birth certificate had his indian name. He did not
even know he had an indian name but his mother was part indian. It took
him four months to change his birth certificate to his English name. I am
trying to find what kind of indian he was. I was told Shoshone, but since
his mother was from Alabama I don't believe there were any Shoshone
indians in Alabama in the mid to late eighteen hundreds. How could I find
the original birth certificate showing his indian name? Maybe that would
say what kind of indian he was. Any help greatly appreciated. My email is

SMITH, BOYD
- SMITH, BOYD William J. Smith (4-12-1829/10-9-1903) married Mary E. Boyd Nolan (1-10-
1833/1908) in MO MS 12-10-1860. They lived in Hamilton, MS and are buried
in the Boyd Family Cemetery.
By 1880 they had 4 children : 1. CHARLES P. b.ca.1867, 2. LILLIAN B.
b.ca.1871, 3. MARY LOU b.ca.1873, and 4. JULIA C. b.ca.1875. Mary E. was
the daughter of James Jackson and Rebecca Roberds Boyd of Old Hamilton.
William J. Smith was the son of Charles S. and Nancy Fowler Smith of
Nettleton, MS. This Smith family migrated to MO MS from Laurens Co. SC
in the 1840's. Would like to correspond with anyone who has any
information on the 4 Smith children of Wm. J. and Mary E. Boyd Smith of
Hamilton. Was Lillie B. Smith who married Dr. J.D. Egger the Lillian
Smith mentioned above who had son James Monroe Egger -- Lillie, J.D., and
J.M. all were postmasters at Hamilton in the early 1900's. Charles P.

- I would like to find out what happened to my great uncle,
Frank Turner. In 1908 from Smithville, MS, my grandfather
received a letter from 'Jennie Davis', writing for her
sister , Mrs. Love Turner (could this be Frank's wife)? She
requested the family come to see Frank because he was very
ill. I would like to know what happened to Frank and also
