Investigation continues in shooting deaths
BOONEVILLE - Two men are dead and a third is injured following a shooting at a Blackland community residence.
Prentiss County deputies, with the
assistance of Mississippi Highway Patrol investigators and a Booneville police
investigator, were trying to piece together the events that led to the Thursday
afternoon shootings, said
Thomas Parham, 53, of the Blackland community, died after he was apparently shot once in the chest at extremely close range, Michael said. Kenny Goddard, 37, of Booneville, died after he was apparently shot twice.
Jerry Davis, 51, of the Blackland
community, was listed in serious but stable condition in the intensive care
unit at
Goddard followed Davis to the
house, and Parham followed Goddard, according to Davis' statement, Michael
said. Goddard and Parham started arguing again and the shooting 4 began,
Davis was able to reach a neighbor's house and ask them to call 911 about 12:50 p.m., Michael said.
Sheriff's deputies, Highway Patrol
investigators and a Booneville police investigator recovered a German automatic
A .38-caliber pistol, believed to have been used to shoot Parham, also was recovered, Michael said.
Investigators were still searching Thursday evening for a possible third gun.

BELMONT -
Mr. Patterson, assisted by Roy Wilson, was engaged in cleaning his power switch and transformer at his gin when he made contact with the high voltage wire. Wilson, working near Mr. Patterson, was knocked down by the shock.
Recovering, he seized a broom and pried Mr. Patterson loose from the wire. Artificial respiration was carried on for more than three hours by employees of the Mississippi Power Company and three physicians were in attendance, but all efforts to revive him failed.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Patterson; his wife, a son, Bernard a daughter, Lessie; a sister, Mrs. A. Yarber, all of Belmont, and two brothers, D. D. Patterson of Belmont and J. C. Patterson of Jasper, Ala.
Interment was in the city cemetery this afternoon.

Grace Kent Phifer passed away on
After graduating from luka High School in 1934, she began her teaching career at Eastport School. While she taught at Eastport, Martin School, and later as Principal at the Pleasant Hill School, she continued her formal education by enrolling in extension courses and summer school at Blue Mountain College and Ole Miss. After retiring as a teacher, she later pursued other business ventures.
Miss Grace married Owen Phifer on
Miss Grace was a lifelong member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and held memberships in several other organizations, including the Order of the Eastern Star.
Funeral services were Tuesday, April 24, at II a.m. at Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Tom Sheffield, Methodist Minister and family friend for forty years providing the Eulogy. He was assisted by Rev. Larry Harbin and Bro. Johnny Nunley.
Pallbearers were Bounce Kent, Tommy Nunley, Bobby Phifer, Benny Phifer, Wendell Phifer, and Jimmy Whitfield. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Al Flannery, Dr. James Ashmore, Red Thornton, Donald Joe Holt, Bob Liles, Aaron Carson, the Honorable Cecil Sumners, Dayton Jourdan, and Bobby Paden. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

H. PITTS
In the death last Tuesday night of Thomas H. Pitts, the county lost a splendid and outstanding citizen. He had suffered a paralytic stroke while at work a few days before his death.
Mr. Pitts was born and reared in the fifth district where he spent all his life. He was the son of the late Tobe Pitts, who was a gallant Confederate veteran, his father lived to be above 90 years of age, he passed away in the same house he was born in.
Mr. Pitts was married in March 1900 to Miss Gertrude Hopper and to this union six children were born, five of whom survive.
He was a kind and devoted husband and an affectionate father, who did all he could to promote the welfare of his children. He was a good citizen and an accommodating neighbor, who was ever ready to help those in need. He was 66 years old.
He is survived by his devoted wife, three sons, Robert, of Booneville; Henry of Memphis and Elmore; and two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Patterson and Mrs. Carl Hughes of Booneville and two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Hare and Mrs. Allen Smith of Booneville.
