Charles Thaddeus Montgomery was born 20 April 1846 to Martha McManus and Hugh Montgomery of Amite County. Hugh had a prior wife, Francis Jones, who died about 1792. Charles Thaddeus later moved to Bookhaven with his family which included his wife, Sarah McLelland, and son Thomas Hugh Montgomery Sr.. From what I have been able to research (his father) Hugh Montgomery had a brother, William, who married Sarena Albritton. Hugh settled in Amite County about 1790 and died there in 1846 - just prior to the birth of Charles Thaddeus. His widow, Martha, then married a Clarke and they moved over to Lincoln County. I believe Hugh and William came from South Carolina (possibly Richland County) but I have never found a family which "fit". Any info on the Montgomerys, McManus, Albrittons, McLellands, etc., etc., would be truly appreciated.

My father, Paul Carruth, was born in Tylertown, Miss. in 1919 but grew up in McComb. He graduated from Millsaps and Duke University and was a Methodist Minister in eastern North Carolina until he died in 1982. We are descendants of John Pipkin Carruth, b. 1838, was the first Amite County volunteer for the Summit Rifles on May 5, 1861, then served in Co. H, 39th Mississippi in May, 1862, surrendering with this group at Port Hudson. Later he was a member of the cavalry unit under Col. DeMonteel, serving in this group until the end of the war. He was the person who bore Col. Cage from the field at Enterprise. All of this is referred to in John Pipkin Carruth's obituary in The Sentinel published upon his death on January 17, 1920. The Carruths are, I am told, included with the Bruce Scottish Clan. I would appreciate questions from Carruths as well as others. I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, and have a Carruth geneology for our Carruth line from 1810.
