Original Claim

Declaration in order to be placed on the pension under the act of the 18th of March 1818 County of Pike
State of MississippiOn the 11th day of december 1827.
Personally appeared in open Court for the County of Pike and State of Mississippi Lasarus Reaves resident in the said County aged about Seventy or Seventy two years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the act of Congress on the 18th of march 1818 and the 1st of may 1820. That Lasarus Reaves Enlisted for the term of eighteen months (day of month nor month recollected) in the year of [blank] in the State of South Carolina in the company of Rangers under Captain Robert Goodwin the above Term of Service, and one other term of Six months under the title of minute men and the said R Goodwin Captain aforesaid in the regiment Commanded by Colonel William Thompson in the line of the State of South Carolina in the [blank] Continental establishment that he continued to Serve in the said Corps until (not recollected[)] when he was regularly discharged from the Service in [blank] in [sic] the State of South Carolina that he hereby relinquishes every claim what ever to a pension except the present that his name is not in the roll of any State except that of the State of South Carolina and that the following are the reasons for not making earlier application for a pension. The first reason was that he was not in possession of the proper information how to make application and after receiving some information on the subject he made an attempt in the year 1825 which applicant failed at the War department in consequence of an insufficiency of proof there had to send to the State of South Carolina for such Testimony as was required which is herewith enclosed, and which brings the time present - And in pursuance of the Act of the 1st of may 1820 I do solemnly swear that I was a resident Citizen of the United States on the 18th day of march 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift sale or any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an act of Congress "Entitled An act to provide for Certain persons engaged in the Land and Naval Service of the United States in the Revolutionary War" passed on the 18th day of march 1818 and that I have not nor any person in trust for me my property or Securities contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the Schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed
I have now in possession the following property

I Certify that the Schedule and oath have been admitted to the record of said Court and that the same are truly Copied therefrom - and I do further Certify that it is the opinion of the said Court that the Total amount in value of the property exhibitted in the aforesaid Schedule is Eight hundred and fifty four dollars In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Seal of the said Court on the 15th day of december 1827

Personally appears before me Benjamin Hodge Senr who being sworn upon the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God saith that he was personally aquainted with Lazarus Rieves in the Revolutionary War, that said Rieves and deponent sevred served in the regular Service under Colonel Thompsons command and under Captain Robert Goodwyn, two several terms of service, the first six months and the second eighteen months that they were in the Battle at Sullevans Island near Charleston in South Carolina and several skirmishes that said Rieves served out his time until offically discharged

Personally came before me the undersigned Justice of the peace in and for the County aforesaid James Massey and after being duly sworn deposeth and sayeth that he does believe that Lazarus Reaves of the State and County aforesaid did enlist and serve eighteen months as a regular soldier in Colonel William Thompsons Regiment of soldiers in the state of south Carolina in ^the^ Revolutionary was betwixt the united States and great Britain the aforesaid James Massey doth say that these are his reasons for believing that Lazarus Reaves did enlist and serve as aforesaid ------ first he did live with the said James Massey at his farthers at the time when he did enlist second he came home on furlough and I James Massey did see his furlough thirdly when his time of service was expired he did come home with a discharge from his officer these are the reasons why I the said James Massey believes that the aforesaid Lazarus Reaves did serve the term abovementioned - Sworn to before me this 11th day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty four
