John Stewart Cromwell

John Stewart Cromwell enrolled at Oxford February 19, 1862.  He enlisted in Confederate States Army for three years at Grenada by Lt. Burnett March 15, 1862, Private, Company A, 29th Regiment Mississippi Infantry.  He was transferred June 29, 1862 to Company C, 1st Battalion Mississippi Sharp Shooters, C.S.A. in Tupelo, Mississippi, which subsequently became Company C, 9th Battalion Mississippi Sharp Shooters.  He left sick at Glasgow, Kentucky on September 12, 1862.  In November and December 1862, he was absent in a parole camp.  He joined his company again in January 1863 and served until April 16, 1864 when he was granted a 30-day furlough.  He rejoined his company and was killed in the Battle of Pickett's Mill on May 27, 1864 near New Hope Church, Georgia.
