Quitman County in the Civil War

Since Quitman was not established as a county until 1877, the men who fought in the Civil War are listed in other counties, notably Tallahatchie and Coahoma.  Finding ones ancestor can thereby become confusing.

One of the simplest methods to find an Civil War Veteran is using the search feature at the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System at http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ .  This site also has excellent information regarding the various regiments that were formed in Mississippi.
