Our organization was established in July 2008 as a multi-county association interested in preserving historical sites and documents. We want to bring to the public's attention, an awareness of these historical sites and their significants to their own communities. We instruct the public as to the importance of maintaining their private and public cemeteries and teach the fundaments of cemetery safety, how to evaluate a cemetery in need of preservation and the basic fundamentals of recording cemeteries.
We hold monthly meetings and invite all who share our interests to visit with us. See our meeting times.
The books listed here are works that belong to the SHRN or have been given to us with permission to distribute. Our organization is proud to be able to sell these books, with the hope that they will enhance the knowledge of the people looking for historical information.
We instruct step by step how to record endangered cemeteries and how to prepare a proper narrative. We teach iconography, which is how to interpret symbols and art work on headstones. We assist in locating hard to find or lost cemeteries and promote the creation of cemetery associations.
We are interested in developing strong communications between genealogical and historical organizations in our South Mississippi area; in an effort to assist our state legislators in developing stronger laws with severe penalties for the destruction and vandalism of our vanishing cemeteries and to promote access to all cemeteries public and private for serious genealogical and historical research.
As a genealogical organization we are interested in procuring genealogical information and community history so we may share this information with our sister organizations. We promote cemetery preservation projects for Genealogical and Historical organizations so that they may develop a stronger community base in their area. We plan and coordinate work shops to help train other organizations or individuals who are interested in preserving their own cemeteries.
Our Mission, the purpose of this Organization is to promote, assist, develop, and conserve the genealogical and historical resources of Mississippi and to cooperate with local, regional, and statewide groups in promoting an awareness of the need to preserve family heritage. Specifically the mission of the Organization is to research, record, accumulate, reproduce, distribute, and circulate genealogical and historical material, and to assist in making such material available to those who are, or may be encouraged to be, interested in family and State of Mississippi history. We will perpetuate the memories of Mississippians and their ancestors to inspire a wholesome regard for those who have been and are now part of the heritage of our State and Nation.
SHRN stresses the importance of accuracy thought careful documentation of research, restoration of historical artifacts, cemeteries, documents and the discovery and public recognition of historical sites. SHRN makes donations by acquisition or memorial to research collections which are open to the public. SHRN disseminates knowledge by the sponsorship of conferences, workshops and seminars.
The SHRN normally meets the fourth Saturday of each month at 2:00pm. The meeting place will be as listed unless special arrangements are made at which time the membership will be notified. Sometimes we have special outings and dates will be posted, so watch the board.
