Museum Education Programs

The Tishomingo County Archives & History Museum serves as an educational institution interested in educating adults and children about Tishomingo County history through exhibits, programs, and publications.  A vibrant group of staff and volunteers tirelessly work on developing programs for school children, local clubs and churches, and adults.

Children's Programs

Camp Courthouse

The future lies in the hands and enthusiasm of the children of today. These children will eventually take over the torch of progress and become the leaders of tomorrow. Therefore, it is practicable for the museum to concentrate on awakening and engaging the active interest of the children in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, and its surrounding area.

Camp Courthouse is the highlight of our summer activities for children, ages 6 to 9. The purpose of the two-day camp held each summer in June is to teach children that history is fun!  The camp is limited to 25 participants. Be sure to sign up early to guarantee your spot.

School Groups

The Tishomingo County Archives & History Museum prefers to make the visit of a school group a truly educational experience, not merely a holiday from classroom routine. Organized lessons on single topics deal with important aspects of the museum. Museum staff and volunteers  show and explain exhibits, and the children can sometimes handle real objects.

Students from Burnsville Middle School receive school credit when they volunteer at the museum. Students serve as docents, assist with cleaning and preserving artifacts,  transcribe records, and perform other related tasks.

Elementary students enjoy viewing the 400 plus artifacts from the rich Chickasaw Indian history displayed in the Native American Room and get hands-on experience in corn grinding and making Indian jewelry. Items from other Mississippi Native American tribes are on display. Prehistoric projectile points, knives, and pottery are on display as well.

The historical beauty and originality of the building and courtroom draw many individuals to the museum. The vast number of resources which were originally used in the courthouse and either collected or purchased by the historical Society during its eight years of operation draw huge numbers to research their family trees. Students find the documentation very useful in political and economic studies. Students and tourists visit the museum to view the courtroom and other areas of the courthouse which were utilized as government offices in the past.

Scout Tours

The museum offers special guided tours for scout troops.  All scouts receive a courthouse badge after the tour.  The museum can also assist with helping the scouts receive other badges and try-its.

Call today to schedule your troop.

Youth Programs

The Tishomingo County Historical & Genealogical Society awards two $150 scholarships to area students in memory of Sgt. Jason W. Vaughn who was killed in the line of duty in Iraq.  To date, Sgt. Vaughn is the only Tishomingo Countian to be killed in Iraqi Operation Freedom.

Adult Programs

Genealogy-related classes are held each year. Check our calendar periodically for upcoming classes.

The Tishomingo County Historical & Genealogical Society meets the second Thursday night of February, April, June, August, October and December.  The meetings are held at 6:00 at the museum.  You do not have to be a member to attend.

Family Programs

Constitution Day Celebration

Chief Tishomingo Chapter DAR and Tishomingo County Historical & Genealogical Society co-sponsor a Constitution Day program each year  to pay honor and tribute to the great symbol of our nation and the freedom it embodies.  Betsy Ross is among our special guests.

Christmas at the Courthouse

Each year the Museum serves hot chocolate and coffee during our annual open house. The museum is beautifully decorated and visitors enjoy doing some shopping in our Woodall Mountain Market Gift Shop. Christmas at the Courthouse is held in conjunction with Iuka's Christmas parade.

Annual Family History Fair

Each year a family history fair is held in May.  The event is typically held on Saturday to encourage genealogical researchers from out of town to attend.  Attendees share genealogical research, including family trees and photographs.
